I woke a little earlier then everyone. I knew we would be back on the roof working on shooting. I pulled on my trainers moving to put on a gray jacket over my black t-shirt and put on the beat up pair of jeans that I normally wear on shooting days. They were pretty ripped from the gravel and falling to my knees for quick shooting and transitioning. I decided to walk through the halls enjoying the small patterns and textures found along the walls. At the pit, I went to the far side where the door was to go up to the roof and shooting range. I climbed the grated metal stairs two at a time. At the top I pushed the door open taking a deep breath of the cold air. It was crisp against my face. My hair was still down so it whipped widely around my face.
"You're up early, Amity."
I turned to the leader that was setting up centers for us to transition to. He was putting numbers for a patter for us to follow as quickly as we can. As you move up numbers the harder the target it is to hit weather it is off the side, facing off center or just far back. You had to hit the target to move on to the next. I ignored his comment walking to the edge sitting on the ledge just watching the sky change colors as the sun rose.
"Did you not hear me Initiate?"
I looked over my shoulder at the man before turning my attention back to the sky.
"Can't I appreciate the calm before the storm?"
It was quiet for a moment. I let out a sigh before turning to the man that was setting out the guns and rounds we would be using.
"You know you can join me right? Rather then snapping at me?"
The leader turned to me shocked by my invitation. He set out a more rounds. I turned back to the sun rise thinking he wasn't going to join. I watched as the deep blue of the night sky slowly turned to a bright golden color as the sun rose in the far. Step came to halt next to me. I turned my head seeing Eric who was moving to the ledge to dangle his legs into the abyss like me.
"What fascinated you so much of the sky? Everytime we are up here you are always looking to the distance."
I smile.
"Finally want to know what my thoughts are."
He smiled lightly.
"I said penny for your thoughts before."
I chuckled.
"And I thought you were just being a smart ass then..."
I turned back to the rising sun as the sky turned to a clear blue with small puffs of white streaked through it.
"I just wonder what is out there. How can something so beautiful have so much violence in it. The war, the fights between factions, life is precious but it is like we take it for granted, so everytime I see the sky, it beauty, I pause and just appreciate it, because who knows how long I will be here to do so."
It was quite for a second.
"And I thought your thought was going to be some girly shit."
I let out an actual laugh.
"Girly shit?"
"You know, because it is pretty and we should appreciate it because it is nice to look at."
I snort a bit a full smile breaking on my face.
"No, I have deep thoughts, not just girly shit thoughts. I have been through enough in life to allow me to appreciate the small things. The deeper meaning to things. You know?"
I turned to look at the man. He eyebrow piercing reflected the sun making the black piercing have a yellow undertone. His face was highlights and his blue eyes held more emotion then he is probably used to showing. He cleared his throat before moving off the edge back to the weapons.
