Chapter 7.5 - Dizzy Day (Katsunori POV)

I need a friend like Kaito 😭

Today, I was sitting in the yard waiting for him. After that day, Kaito decided he was going to be my friend. Sometimes Kaito still plays tag or some other games with the other children but he doesn't accept every invitation he receives now but spends his time playing with me. We usually talk about the newest tv show, play a new game that Kaito invented, study for a test, do homework and more. When I first got to school, I always thought he was too good for me and that's why he never talked to me but then I realized it was because he was always invited to play with the other kids so he didn't bother getting to know me.

The weather was fairly nice but I'm shivering and sweating at the same time. When I woke up this morning, I was dizzy and my skin hurt whenever I touched it but my mom told me to shake it off and go to school. As the classes went on, I became dizzier and dizzier until I dozed off. I slept for five minutes and it was the best five minutes of my life but the teacher woke me up in front of the whole class. My ears instantly turned red and I just wanted to disappear.

As I was waiting, my head started to hurt and I slouched back on the bench.

"Katsunori! I'm here!" I heard Kaito say but I was too tired to get up and greet him. I heard heavy footsteps and saw Kaito in front of me holding a bag with candy in it. "My mom packed me some candy." He said and handed me one.

I felt like I was going to throw up. My appetite suddenly disappeared today. I couldn't even finish my lunch today.

"No thank you."

Kaito put the candy back in the bag and stared at me. "Are you okay Katsunori? You're so pale." Kaito placed his hand on my forehead and quickly took it off. "Ahh, your forehead, it's so hot."

"I'm okay Kaito. Don't worry."

"No, we're going to the nurse now."

And so Kaito carried me to the nurse. My face glowed bright red as he carried me in front of everyone to the office. We got to the school nurse's office and Kaito put me down on a chair and rang the bell, signaling to the nurse that there's someone here.

"Let's go down. The nurse is going to ask a lot of questions."

"But you have a fever, Katsunori. Don't worry. You're in good hands. I'll stay beside you."

"But-" and before I could finish, the nurse opened the door and welcomed me inside.

So it turns out I actually had a fever. The nurse picked up her rusty, thousand year old, sage green phone and dialed mom's phone number to try to call her but I knew she wouldn't come pick me up. Mom was selling clothes and it would take way too much time to come here and pick me up. That's why mom told me to shake it off this morning. We were in need of money because my father was a mysterious man that had taken advantage of mom so it was just my mom and me against the world. Selling clothing doesn't make a lot of money so she can't afford to lose any customers by taking a day off.

"Okay, Katsunori. I got someone to pick you up." The nurse finally said after calling multiple phone numbers.

"But my mom's busy."

"Your friend Kaito's mom can pick you up."

"Okay."

I was now sitting in the car of Kaito's mom Asuka.

"Thank you Mrs. Asuka."

"No problem Katsunori. You should sleep for sometime. I know you must be tired."

I like Mrs. Asuka. She's really nice. I had seen Kaito show his mom his test scores and her encouraging him to do better next time. No harsh words. No disappointment. If I went home with an eighty on a test, my mom would be really angry and disappointed.

When I woke up a few hours later, I was in Kaito's house. I've never been to his house so I was kind of embarrassed. I didn't start sleeping talking, right? Mom caught me doing that once and now I'm scared I'll do it again. My headache wasn't as bad anymore but it still hurts.

"Kaito?" I said to the walls of the room.

The door creaked open and Kaito peeked in. "Hi Katsunori! You're finally awake! Are you hungry? I'll ask mom to make you something."

I secretly thanked Kaito for asking me because I was quite hungry.

"Hi Katsunori." Mrs. Asuka said, walking into the bedroom. "Come out and drink some soup."

I got out of bed and realized I wasn't wearing my school uniform anymore when I remembered wearing them on the car ride.

"Oh yeah, mom let you wear one of my pajamas when you got here." Kaito said, noticing my confusion.

"Oh okay." I said starting to get a little drowsy.

Before I started drinking the soup, Mrs. Asuka gave me some medicine to eat. I remember the rest of the night was kind of blurry since I was still sick but I could hear Kaito trying to talk to me. Then, I think I fell asleep right on his shoulder.

I woke up in the middle of the night in my own bedroom. I was still wearing Kaito's pajamas. I secretly thanked Kaito and his whole family for taking care of me that night.
