Y/n's POV

After my run in with Victoria and the mysterious vampire who helped me; Carlisle had taken me up to his room, into his en-suite to get cleaned up. I had been silent, frozen, unable to move from fright. I wasn't one to scare easily, even when face to face with death.

Yet for some reason something foreboding lurked over me, like this encounter, unlike any of the other encounters before, was a warning of what was yet to come.

Maybe it was Victoria's words taunting me. Everything she said in that moment when she held me by my neck, feet inches from the ground; it was all white noise then. Now that the racing of my heart was no longer pounding my ears I could hear everything she said.

Her words echo loudly in my head. Everything about how she wanted Carlisle and Edward to suffer the same feelings she had when she found James dead. Then there was also this thing she mentioned: a shield, she said it was stronger today. Whatever the hell that meant?

I could feel the wet cloth being gently dragged along my face and Carlisle's fingertips lifting my chin. My dull eyes flickered to his golden brown ones. His eyes stared into mine, capturing my E/c eyes and luring me into the depths of his golden brown ones.

I was unable to look away.

Just like they always had been, his eyes were mysterious and warm holding hundreds of untold stories of his life. Embedded with the change of each era he lived through. Every new and old experience countless lifetimes had brought upon him. And yet they looked at me softly, welcoming my frightened ones into their embrace.

He encapsulated my mind merely by staring into my eyes. Another tear slipped past the dams which held the waters of my eyes.

He was there to wipe it away.

"Such beautiful eyes shouldn't cry these delicate tears." He spoke softly voice barely above a whisper.

"I'm sorry." I apologised, wet lashes blinking another tear down my face.

"You made a mistake, everyone does, you're only human after all." He whispered, swiping the new tear away.

A small scoffed left my aching throat. "Everyone seems keen to remind me of my mortality recently." I sat up straight, swiping harshly at my eyes to rid myself of the brimming tears.

"Y/n, look at me." Carlisle's voice was soft, his hands resting and rubbing soothing circles on my knees. "You are human. But you are strong, you have survived countless near death experiences, you needn't be ashamed to be human."

"I am not ashamed to be..." I cut him off before cutting myself off with a huff. I jumped down off the countertop, the space between us being nothing more than centimetres. Our bodies were practically pressed together, my back harshly pressed against the counter. I looked up at Carlisle about to finish what I was saying when my breath caught in my throat.

Being this close to him it's always proven to be a weakness of mine. I could feel the heat rising to my cheeks when he lent forwards, trapping me between his arms and the counter.

"What were you saying?" Carlisle says with a slight taunt.

"That's not fair." I blurt.

"What's not fair?" He counters.

"I...you...stop it." I whined, jabbing him in the side in hopes he'd flinch away. Of course I forget that he's a vampire so a jab from a human must feel like a poke to him.
