3rd POV
The hour of Bella's party had arrived, the Cullens and the eldest swan had spent the evening setting up the place in a style Bella would appreciate.
As of right now Edward and his mate were just outside the room the party would be held in continuing a conversation from their English class.
"The Volturi are a very old, very powerful family. I guess they're the closest thing to royalty my world has." The brunette male explains to his mate as they stare up at a large and grand vintage painting.
"Is that Carlisle?" Bella points out.
"Yeah. He lived with them for a few decades. Described them as very refined. No respect for human life, of course, but respect for the arts and the sciences, at least."
As Edward began his story of Carlilse life with the Volturi, Bella continued looking at the painting but the longer she looked and the more she listened, the painting seemed to come to life.
"And the law. Above all, the law." Gloomy music played in her mind as the three men who held a powerful pose began to retreat off the balcony the painting was set in.
"Vampires have laws?" Bella voices.
"Not very many. And only one that's regularly enforced." As Edward said that Bella began to imagine another scene where Carlisle stood behind one the dark haired guys, having a cloak put on with the help of a servant.
"What is it?" She asked. As she did the image of her imagination moved again and now the three men from the photo, all now wearing black cloaks, made their way to three chairs in the center of a hall. Thrones. All the while Carlilse remained standing behind them.
"That we keep the existence of our kind a secret. We don't make spectacles of ourselves. And we don't kill conspicuously." As he spoke Bella imagined a ruff looking vampire weak from being in the sun being held on his knees in front of these three men. The middle man who appeared to be the leader stepped down the step to his throne towards him.
"Unless, of course, you want to die." That said the man placed his hands on either side of the kneeling man's face. For a moment he seemed to become dazed, his crimson red eyes focused on something that didn't appear in the room.
The other two 'kings' watched their friend eagerly, the blonde smirking as the brunette shifts in his chair. After a moment the man looks down at the one below him.
The helpless man's breath shakes as the king smiles down at him softly before it becomes a sinister smirk, his eyes hardening as the sound of bones crunching fills the ear of the men in the room.
The guards holding the man down pulled on his arms and the king pulled on his neck. The king's smirk twitched as he ripped the head of the man's shoulder followed by the guards tearing his arms off. The man let a final gasp out as his body fell limp to the ground at the king's feet.
As the body landed with a thud Carlilse looked away, his eyes different to the others in the room. "You gotta stop talking about that. I can't even think..." Bella remarks fear slightly lacing in her voice.
"About someone hurting you." She finished as Edward smirked looking down at his feet.
"Bella. The only thing that can hurt me is you." He states lifting his golden eyes to meet her brown orbs. "And I don't have anything else to be afraid of."
Clicking her tongue Bella's gaze bounces to her feet then Edward. "That's not true." Images of the night at the ballet studio filled her head and Victoria rubbing the ashes of her late mate on her cheeks.
"Victoria. She'll come for me one day. Alice will see when she decides, and ... and we'll be ready." As Edward spoke at first he seemed unbothered but his tone softens towards the end as he gazes at the younger Swan sibling.
