it was the weekend of november's grandmother's funeral and everyone was on edge. niall insisted on going to support november and her family, but november didn't want him to go.

in the end, the two stood at the cemetery, surrounded by november's family. november huddled close to niall as it began to sprinkle, little raindrops hitting her cheeks.

mr. rivera held his wife close as she began to cry, making november tear up. it was never a good feeling to see your mother cry.

by the time the funeral ended, november's makeup was ruined and niall's hair was soaked from the rain. they said goodbye to november's family and walked to the nearby park, not caring that it was raining.

"how are you feeling?"

"depressed, confused.. worried," november replied.

"elaborate."

"depressed because my grandma is gone, confused about life, i guess, and worried for my mom. she has no one now. i mean, she has me and my dad, and her brothers and sisters, but she has no parents. i can't imagine what that's like."

the rain started to come down harder, but luckily there was an empty tunnel nearby. the couple ran inside and huddled close together, shivering in the process.

"we should stay in here until the rain clears up. the car is parked pretty far and i know you don't want to walk in the rain," niall took off his jacket and placed it on november's shoulders.

she thanked him, still pretty cold. she was wearing a black dress with a pair of black flats that were now all muddy and gross.

"your birthday is tomorrow. how do you feel?"

niall shrugged, "21 is going to feel the same as 20, just that i can legally drink in the states."

"please don't get wasted," november sighed, "i'm not comfortable around drunk people."

"don't worry your pretty little head, baby. i was just going to go out, get some beer, and come back home."

november bit her lip, trying to picture what alcohol tasted like. the media made it seem so glamorous, but she knew that wasn't the truth. sure, november had been to college parties (no thanks to bri and chloe), but she hated underage drinking.

"i don't want you drinking and driving."

"i meant buying a pack of beer and bringing it home, nov. unless you don't want me to drink in front of you, then i understand," niall kissed november's temple.

"no, i'm fine with you drinking, just as long as you don't get drunk," november paused. "i feel bad that you have to spend your birthday with me. i bet you would rather spend it at home with your family and friends."

"don't worry about it, babe. as long as i'm with you, i'll be fine."

"that was really cheesy."

"don't ruin the moment," niall teased.

november wrapped niall's jacket tighter around her and leaned against niall's chest. he wrapped his arms around her waist and began playing with her damp hair, slightly pulling. she cried out in pain and slapped his hand away, making him frown.

"i don't have a hair pulling kink like you do," she rubbed her head.

"you must have some sort of kink; everyone does."

november thought for a moment, but nothing came to mind. "i don't think i have any."

just as niall was about to reply, a clap of thunder echoed throughout the tunnel, making november shriek. she rested her head in niall's neck, breathing heavily. niall shushed her, rubbing circles into her back.

"i don't like thunder."

"i can see that."

she whined into niall's neck when another clap of thunder echoed in the small tunnel. no one was around, which was good for niall, but november was freaking out.

the thunder stopped, but the rain was falling harder than it was a few moments ago. niall attempted to distract november by telling her a story, but no matter what he did, she would just shriek whenever there was thunder.

"niall.."

"yeah?"

"zayn told me not to tell you this but.." november sighed, "naughty boy is using zayn. zayn owes him money for weed and he doesn't have money to pay him back, so he's staying at zayn's apartment for the next month and a half."

niall didn't say anything, he just continued rubbing circles into november's back.

"i think.. we should help him get away from naughty boy.. or like, help him pay the debt."

niall stopped his hand movements, "you want to give him money that we've worked hard for just so some prick can move out of his apartment? are you listening to yourself?"

another clap of thunder.

"i know it sounds stupid but zayn needs help and we're- i'm his friend. if i were in his position wouldn't you help me?"

niall shook his head, "no, i wouldn't. i love you with all of my heart but if you were in that position i would want you to learn your lesson. it's his fault for buying the weed in the first place. let him learn his lesson."

november couldn't argue with that logic. niall was right, zayn needed to learn from his mistakes, even if he did lose friends in the process.

"you know we're alone, right?" niall placed his hand on november's thigh.

she blushed, pushing his hand away and began pressing soft kisses to his neck and jawline.

"i don't feel comfortable doing anything in here," she confessed, "and we just buried my grandma."

"you're right, i'm sorry."

"tomorrow for sure though, birthday boy. my gift isn't exactly amazing, but i hope you like it."

"if it's from you i know i'll love it," niall kissed her cheek.

the rain started to calm, the thunder slowly fading away. niall stood up, bringing november with him. he grabbed her muddy shoes and piggybacked her all the way to his car, and november couldn't have asked for a better boyfriend.
