"So, are you going to tell me why we're up here?" Marjorie asked, sitting next to Reece and putting one hand on his knee.
"Well, I know I'm not the best at opening up, but I wanted to share a part of me with you that I've never shared with anyone else before." Reece shifted uncomfortably. Marjorie slid herself over to him and planted a tender kiss on his cheek before resting herself against his chest in an attempt to calm him down as she could tell he was nervous.
"Reece, you can share anything with me, but I want you to know I won't think any less of you if you aren't ready for this."
"No, Marjorie, I want to do this." He took a deep breath, ready to start, and looked into Marjories eyes. "So this may sound silly, but when I was a kid, I really wanted to be an astronaut. It started out as a way to get the people I cared most about away from dad and as far away as physically possible. Not just for their sakes but for mine as well. When dad would go mad about something, I would always put myself between him and them because, well, better I got hurt than they did. Dad always said it was ridiculous, and he absolutely hated the fact that I didn't grow out of it when he told me to. As I got older, I kept it quieter but still thought about it. Even to the point that astronomy, cosmology, and astrophysics were my strongest subjects in school. I didn't have to work as hard to catch up on those when I missed a class anyway, and I missed a lot of classes. My father forced me to do every sport you can think of, whether I liked it or not, and in between my own classes and games I also had to make sure I made it to any school event of Autumn's so she had someone there cheering her on because I knew what it feels like when nobody ever turns up for any of them. As I got older and learned to drive, I would use it as an escape and just disappear to somewhere like this and stargaze. It was the only time I could truly be myself and not feel like I had to be a certain way for someone else. That's carried on as I've grown up. When I needed to get away from dad or Mia, I would disappear somewhere quiet and study the skies. I've never shared it with anyone before, but I want to share it with you." Reece finally looked over at Marjorie. He hadn't when he was talking as he thought nerves would get the better of him, and he wouldn't be able to finish. When he did, he could see the tears in her eyes.
"Reece, I had no idea you had to go through all that as a child."
"Yea well, it is what it is." He shrugged.
Marjorie could tell he didn't want to talk about his past anymore, so she decided to change the subject quickly. "So, you've brought me up here, so what is it you wanted to show me?"
His eyes lit up at the question, and he started scanning the sky quickly, looking for something interesting to show her first.
"OK, so that slightly blurry cluster you can see over there," he said, pointing to the sky, "That's actually the Andromeda galaxy." He reached for his telescope and set it up so that Marjorie could see it even clearer. "Then that there is Saturn, and just over from that, you can see Mars. Over there, you can see Orion, that's Ursa Major and Ursa Minor..." Reece carried on pointing out different planets and constellations, moving the telescope to show Marjorie what he was looking at as much as he could.
"Wait, Reece, so that first thing you showed me, that's a whole other galaxy? As in completely outside our own, anything could be happening in there, and we'd have no idea?"
"Well, yes, but anything we can see now actually took place over 2.5 million years ago as, even though it's our closest neighbouring galaxy, that's how many lightyears away it is so that's how long the light takes to travel from there to here. It pretty likely that some of those stars don't even exist anymore, even though we can see them from here tonight." This went on for hours, Reece showing Marjorie a planet or constellation, and then giving her facts about it or how old it was. She didn't think she could fall anymore in love with him before that night, but this proved her wrong. Watching him light up as he explained to her what was above them, the giddiness as, after being terrified, he'd scare her off with his geekiness, he found she was taking a genuine interest is what he had to say. She didn't hide the fact that she didn't understand it all when he went all technical, but it was still so nice to see him let his guard down and let her in to this side of him.
After enjoying their food and Marjorie quizzing him on various facts while they laid down cuddling and watching the sky, Marjorie decided she couldn't take it anymore, this side or Reece is far too sexy. Her hand had already been tracing patterns on his chest under his jumper, now she slid her hand down his body and to a stop around the zipper of his jeans.
