He knew she'd want time to get ready, even though he'd told her she didn't need to make a massive effort. So he took the opportunity to get everything together. He went and bought all her favourite snacks along with a bottle of champagne. He was just about to pay when he had an idea he thought she might find cute, so he turned back to pick up some 7up and a packet of Doritos as well. After showering and changing at his, he packed everything up and got back in the car before driving to where he was planning on taking Marjoie tonight and setting everything up. He laid out blankets and little solar lights to create an ambience. Then he left to pick up Marjorie.
He arrived back at hers nearly 2 hours later. He took the ring box out of the glove compartment and put it in his rucksack with everything else, and let himself in. There was no sign of her downstairs, so he went upstairs looking for her. He walked into her bedroom to find her just finishing off her hair. He walked up behind her, sliding his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder, making eye contact in the mirror as he said, "Hey gorgeous." She put one hand on his face and leaned into him as he kissed her cheek. "You ready to go?" He asked, his eyes taking in the reflection of her body in the mirror.
"Just need to put my shoes and and I'm done." She slid her feet into a pair of trainers, expecting to walk from the car to some remote, quiet location Reece knows, before they walk downstairs and get in the car. It was the shorter drive for a stargazing date Reece had ever taken her on, as less than 30 minutes later, they stopped at a large set of gates with a 'Private Property' sign on the front. Reece pulled up next to a keypad, wound down his window, and tapped in a 6 digit number, which resulted in the gates sliding open.
"Reece, where are we going? What is this place?" Marjorie asked
"So this place is owned by that family if a guy I went to school with. They never use it. It's literally just empty land, a real case of more money than they know what to do with. They maintain it, and that's about it. He said years ago to use it if I ever needed to get away from dad or Mia. It's far enough outside of town that there's no light pollution, but close enough I could get here if I just needed an hour or so to myself." As he was talking, he turned off the main path they had been driving down onto a much smaller track towards a steep hill. When they got to the top, Marjorie could see the lights gently flickering ahead of them on the ground. She gasped as she took in the sight, knowing that Reece had put the effort in to come here before picking he up to get this ready. They got out of the car and walked over, Marjorie now spotting a single can of 7Up and half a bag of Doritos. She looked up at him, "Our first date." She said quietly.
"Yep, you asked if I was free that night, I said I was all yours and asked where you wanted to go, and you said you...."
"Have a can of 7Up in the fridge and half a packet of Doritos in the cupboard." She said, smiling at him. "Best date of my life.""Could you call it a date?" He asked, laughing, "You basically jumped me as soon as I got to yours, and that carried on for the whole weekend."
She playfully elbowed him in the ribs and said, "You weren't complaining at the time. Is this you trying to recreate that weekend? Because you are not getting me out here naked for the full weekend, it's too cold."
"Don't worry, that's not why we're here, I just saw them when I was at the shop and thought it would be funny. Although," he said playfully, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her in close. "You said not the whole weekend... So part of the weekend's fine then, right?" He winked before she playfully pushed him away and went to sit down.
They settled on the blanket, and Reece unpacked the food he'd actually bought for the evening, being careful to keep the champagne hidden in the bottom of the cool bag. They sat there for a while, waiting for the show to start, just chatting about their day. "I still can't believe YOU covered in the rooms. I know I shouldn't be so shocked, but I am. You were so cute with the kids, though."
"I might have to do it more often, I really enjoyed myself. Besides, it's good practice." He said without thinking.
"Practice? Practice for what?" Marjorie asked.
He was kicking himself. Marjorie still didn't know about Autumn being pregnant, and he wasn't about to risk his life by telling her. "Just in general, you know. In case I need to cover more often. Keep my hand in." As he finished the sentence, hoping he'd covered up his slip well enough, Marjorie wouldn't think anymore of it he looked up and saw the first few meteors fly across the sky. Marjorie was in awe. She'd never sat and watched anything like this before, and Reece giving her little facts and explaining things to her as it was happening just made it even better. She moved in even closer to him, resting her head on his shoulder just watching the show. Reece had been wondering how he was going to be able to get up so he could pop the question without her suspecting but was struggling to come up with a reason. Then he got lucky, Marjorie decided she wanted to take some photos, and her phone was in the car, so she got up and walked over to get it.
While she was gone, Reece got the ring box out of his bag. She walked back over, taking pictures as she walked of both the sky and what Reece had set up for her with the view in the background. She couldn't wait to show the girls how romantic Reece was and the effort he'd gone to just for a date night. As she got back to Reece and stopped again to take a few more pictures of the sky, she could sense him moving next to her.
"Marjorie?" Reece asked tentatively, causing her to turn around and see him on one knee. She gasped, dropping her phone as her hand flew up to her mouth in shock. "Marjorie, from the first time I met you, I knew there was something special about you. The more I got to know you, the more I realised you were something I never before believed existed, my soul mate. I know us getting together wasn't smooth sailing, I mean at one point you even hated me and rightly so given what had happened, but we've overcome loads of obstacles and I don't want to face anymore in this world without you by my side. You make dealing with all the other crap so much easier, just by being present. You're everything I've ever dreamed of, and I love you, so, will you marry me?"
As he finished the last sentence, he opened the ring box, and she saw the ring she had fallen in love with when she accidentally found it in his car. The ring she had convinced herself would be for Autumn from Winter, not for her from Reece. A few seconds had passed, and Reece was starting to feel a little awkward at the silence. "How long do I stay down here." he thought to himself.
After what felt to Reece like forever, Marjorie finally screamed, "YES, YES, OH MY GOD YES!!" And threw herself into his arms, in what almost resembled a rugby tackle, knocking him to the ground and landing on top of him. He managed to snap the box shut before he got knocked over and dropped it, so the ring didn't fall out and get lost. He wrapped his arms around her as her hands tangled in his hair, and she kissed him like she might never get the chance to again. Reece started to feel his face get a little wet as he was underneath her. "I knew she'd cry." He thought, as she carried on kissing him.
