"What do you mean, get to know each other? Everything I need to know was on your kids' intake forms, and the only thing you need to about me is that I and all my staff are qualified to look after him."
"Don't be like that. Stevie spends so long here, I just want to know who I'm leaving him with, you know? It's a safeguarding thing."
Reece shook his head and sighed. What Reece didn't know was someone was standing outside the office door while this conversation was going on. Marjorie had decided to come over and check on him just to make sure he was doing OK after yesterday. She considered barging in, but hearing the annoyance in his voice, stayed outside listening.
He crossed his arms and sat back on his desk. "What do you want to know so badly you've barged into my office when I've got things to do?"
"Don't be like that, Reece." She said, trying to sound flirty. "Nothing wrong with two people being friendly. So what do you get up to when you're not at the nursery?"
"Usually spending time with my girlfriend." He replied, staring fixedly at her, in the hope she'd take the hint.
"Girlfriend? Not married, then? That's good to know. Although even if you were, vows were meant to be broken, weren't they." She said with a wink
"Is that what you think? Good to know." He answered.
Marjorie was still stood outside listening. This part of the conversation was making her want to barge in and interrupt, but at the same time, she was also curious about how Reece would handle it.
"I saw the Instagram video you made. The one with that, Marjorie woman shouting at you in the background. She sounds like a piece of work. And she's so plain. Are you really with her? Seems that someone who looks like you and with a physique like that could have their pick of women. Did you lose a bet? Or is it sympathy?"
Reeces' eyes narrowed, and his fists clenched. Hearing someone talk that way about the woman he loved was enough to tip him over the edge. He closed his eyes and thought, "Just breathe, buddy, she's just trying to test the waters and see if she's in with a shot. You know Marj is everything you ever wanted end of. She'll eventually take the hint and bugger off. Just don't lose your temper. It's not worth it. She's not worth it."
"You know," Reece finally responded aloud, "if you're trying to win me over, you really are going the wrong way about it. Marjorie is 100 times the woman you could ever be. She's kind, loyal, caring, loves with every ounce of being, and is just generally gorgeous inside and out. All things you apparently know nothing about."
Marjorie could feel the tears welling up in her eyes as she heard her man defending her like that. She had no idea how she got so lucky that this gorgeous man wanted her, and judging from what she just heard, definitely only her.
"Reece, you're overthinking this." She said, walking towards him and running her hand down his chest. "We can still have some fun. Bet I could show you some things she couldn't. Have you ever done it on that desk of yours?" She said, sliding her hand further down his body towards his belt.
Reece uncrossed his arms and grabbed her wrist. "That won't be happening. I've got things to do."
"Grrr... Can't you recognise a good thing when it's right in front of you? What could you possibly have to do that could top what I could do for you?"
"Me for a start!" Marjorie picked that exact moment to walk through the door with a face like thunder. She'd heard enough. She looked over at Reece and winked, so he knew he wasn't the one in trouble.
"Marjorie... I was only....." The mum stammered.
"Only what? Insulting me without even knowing me? Trying to steal my boyfriend? Or at least get in his pants. Now, he said he has things to do, so I strongly recommend that, if you're going to do anything, it's that you do one!"
Reece had to look down at the floor to hide the fact that he was trying to stifle laughter at Marjorie, giving her what for.
"Well," she started, looking from Marjorie to Reece and back again. "I think I'll be going."
"Byyyeee." Marjorie said, watching her walk out.
Reece couldn't contain his laughter anymore. "Hahaha, oh my god, Marjorie, that was incredible! When she asked what I had to do and you walked in and said you!! I don't know how I held it together. I love you so much. How long were you standing out there?"
"Since pretty much the start. I didn't come in before because you were doing such a good job defending me and trying to diplomatically tell her where to go." She walked over to where he was still sitting on the edge of his desk and wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him in for a kiss. His hands slid down her body, and round her waist, pulling her in closer and deepening the kiss.
As they broke apart, he looked her up and down before raising one eyebrow. "Are we going to carry on with whatever it was I had to 'do'" He asked with a wink.
Marjorie shook her head. "Not in the nursery.... again...."
Reece made puppy dog eyes at her, but Marjorie just pushed him away. "I mean it, Mister!! Not in the nursery, and definitely not while it's open. You can wait until we get home. I actually came over to make sure you were OK after yesterday?"
"Yea, yea, I'm OK. I've had a chat with Carly, so I'm feeling better about that now. Well, she had a chat, I had a listen mainly." He chuckled. "She just turned up with lunch for us off her own back. It was really sweet. She's never bought me lunch before."
"Bless her, that's so sweet." With that, Marjories phone rang. "Hey Char, is everything OK, my love?"
"Hey Marjorie, sorry to bother you, but we have a parent here kicking off about the fact we used nursery sun cream on their child because they hadn't brought their own in, also they've brought thier own in today apparently and its sun oil. I've tried explaining the policy and why it's not right to use that on them, but they aren't having it. I would get Autumn, but she's currently in the bathroom being sick, so I thought I'd call you.' Charlotte finished in a hurry she planned on hanging up as soon as she knew Marjorie was on her way back.
"OK, my love, see you in a minute, I'm leaving now."
She planted a firm kiss on Reeces' lips as she walked past him. "Duty calls parents picking fights again, and your sister is being sick again, apparently. That's been happening a lot lately, have you noticed? I hope she's ok. I'll see you later yea when you pick me up?"
"Yea, see you tonight, bye gorgeous."
Reece watched her walk away, imagining all the things he wanted to do to her when he got her alone that night. Although, then he remembered, there was going to be a meteor shower tonight....
