Mia heard the knock at the door and got up to answer, wondering who that could be. It must be Char, and she'd forgotten her key again. It wouldn't be the first time that had happened, and she doubted it would be the last. "Forgot your key again, sweetheart?" She said as she opened the door. She was stunned into silence when she saw it was Reece standing there instead.
"Sorry, no, I didn't forget it. Unlike you, I don't get keys cut to other people's houses without telling them." Reece replied with a small smirk, hoping it would make Mia see he's trying to joke.
"Reecey! What are you doing here?"
"Char came to see me. She's worried about you... and me, apparently."
"So what happened at this visit then?"
"Char and Marjorie made me talk about last night. Mainly Char."
"And how many chocolate bars do you owe her for that little impromptu session?" Mia asked, smirking.
Reece started laughing. "I asked that exact same question. Are you gonna let me in or not?"
Mia stood back and held the door open for him to walk in. "So what are you doing here?"
He walked straight into her lounge and sat on the sofa. His eye drifted to her laptop on the table. A video paused on the screen of the two of them from about 15 years earlier. "Mia, I'm sorry about how I reacted last night. It just really wasn't what I was expecting to hear, and it hit me harder than I'd like to admit."
"Reecey, you don't need to apologise. That should be me. You never should have found out like that, and definitely not from him."
"Maybe not, but I think you were probably right in what you said last night. I probably would have tried to make us a family, I probably would have wanted it too much. I just wish you hadn't had to go through it alone. I wish I could have been there to support you and help you because I know damn well he wouldn't have. But still you went to him."
Mia sat there in silence for a few minutes, internally arguing with herself over whether or not to tell him this. Eventually, she figured she had nothing else to lose as there was a very good chance she'd lost him anyway. "You may not know it, but you were there for me, Reecey." She said, taking his hand. "Do you remember 15 years ago? I was really sick for a few days and then just didn't get out of bed for about 3 weeks. I said I felt sick and weak, and you tried to get me to go to the doctors, and I wouldn't. I kept saying I'd be fine. You kept bringing me homemade soup and anything and everything I asked for. You didn't leave my side for the whole 3 weeks unless you absolutely had to, like when you needed to go shopping, so there was something in the house to keep my strength up. You barely slept because you were so worried about me. Every available second, you had spare you just spent holding me. That was what was wrong. I recovered from it in itself pretty quickly, but the three weeks was me wondering if I'd made the right decision saying goodbye to him. You couldn't have been anymore there for me than you were, Reecey. I may have been the only one who knew why, but I was not alone."
"Wait, you said he? Surely it was too early to know?"
"It was, far too early. I don't know why, but I've just always pictured this hyperactive little blonde boy with your eyes running around. I don't know why, but I'm 100% sure it would have been a mini version of my Reecey. Maybe it's because I know what you're capable of, and I knew what I was capable of, and the world needs more people like you, not me."
Reece dropped his head into his hands. He wanted to cry, but as much as he had known Mia longer than anyone, he didn't feel comfortable enough for her to see that side of him. He sat there for a few minutes and composed himself before looking back up at the laptop. "I don't know, Mia, a few more mean redheads wouldn't be the worst thing in the world." He said with a smile. "What have you been watching?" He asked, desperately looking for a distraction.
