The hallway buzzed with the muffled sounds of students shuffling between classes, but Victoria Harrison's heart pounded louder than any of it. She was in the middle of history class when Mr Reed appeared at the door. His face was stern, eyes dark with worry as he exchanged a few words with her history teacher, who then nodded and gestured for Victoria to follow him.
Victoria gathered her things, her stomach twisting in knots. Mr Reed didn't say a word as he led her down the corridors, past curious stares and whispered speculations. The silent walk seemed endless until they reached the door of the head teacher's office. Mr Wilson wasn't present, which did nothing to ease her nerves.
'Come in.' Mr Reed said quietly, holding the door open for her. His voice was tight, strained.
She stepped into the room, feeling a cold sweat break out across her skin. Mr Reed closed the door behind them, the click of the latch echoing ominously in the small, dimly lit office. On the desk, Mr Wilson's laptop sat open, the screen facing away from her.
'Sit down.' Mr Reed instructed, his voice barely above a whisper.
Victoria sat, her hands trembling as she placed her bag on the floor. She looked up at Mr Reed, searching his face for any sign of reassurance, but all she saw was fear.
'What's going on?' she asked, her voice quivering.
Mr Reed took a deep breath, then turned the laptop towards her. 'Victoria, I need you to see this.'
He tapped a key, and the screen came to life. Grainy footage played out, showing the two of them in the dimly lit office late at night, wrapped in an intimate embrace, kissing passionately. The timestamp left no room for doubt. Victoria's blood turned to ice.
'Oh my god.' she whispered, her voice barely audible. 'Where did you get this?'
'Mr Wilson's laptop.' Mr Reed replied, his voice tight with anxiety. 'I found it by accident. He must have reviewed the security footage and saved it.'
Victoria's mind raced. 'Do you think he saw it? Do you think he knows?'
Mr Reed ran a hand through his hair, his composure fraying. 'I don't know, but if he did, we're both in serious trouble. You could be excluded, Victoria. And I.... I could lose my job, my career.'
Fear surged through her, and she felt tears welling up. 'My mum.... if she finds out, she'll be devastated. She'll never forgive me.'
Mr Reed leaned forward, his face etched with desperation. 'We have to think, Victoria. We need to figure out what to do. If Mr Wilson hasn't seen it yet, maybe there's a way to delete the footage before he does.'
'But what if he already has?' she asked, her voice cracking. 'What if he's just waiting to confront us?'
Mr Reed paced the office, the tension between them palpable. 'We can't assume the worst. We need to act quickly. We need to find out if Mr Wilson knowns anything, and if he doesn't, we need to erase this footage.'
Victoria nodded, swallowing hard. 'Okay. But how do we find out if he knows?'
Mr Reed stopped pacing and looked at her, his eyes filled with a mix of fear and determination. 'I'll talk to him. I'll try to gauge if he suspects anything. You just need to stay calm and act normal. Can you do that?'
Victoria nodded again, though she felt anything but calm. 'Yes, I'll try.'
He reached out and took her hand, squeezing it gently. 'We'll get through this, Victoria. We have to.'
They sat in silence for a moment, the weight of their predicament pressing down on them. The fear of discovery loomed large, each of them terrified of the potential consequences for different reasons. Mr Reed feared losing his job, his reputation, while Victoria feared the loss of her future, and the wrath of her mother.
The seconds ticked by, each one feeling like an eternity. Finally, Mr Reed released her hand and stood up. 'I'm going to find Mr Wilson. You go back to your lesson. And don't act suspicious.'
Victoria nodded, both of them leaving the office. As the door closed behind them, she stared into space, the damming footage stuck in her brain. The reality of their situation crashed down on her, leaving her paralysed with fear.
All she could do was wait, hoping that somehow, they could find a way out of this nightmare. She prayed that their secret wouldn't ruin their lives, but deep down, she knew that whatever was going to happen, wasn't going to be good.
