Victoria paced back and forth in Alec's living room, nerves evident in every step. Alec watched her from the couch, trying to remain calm for both their sakes. Today was the day they had decided to talk to Charlotte and ask for her acceptance of their relationship.
'Are you sure we're ready for this?' Victoria asked, her voice wavering slightly.
Alec stood up and took her hands in his. 'Yes, we are. We love each other, and that's what matters. We've been through so much already. We can do this.'
Victoria took a deep breath, nodding. 'Okay. Let's go.'
They drove to Victoria's house in relative silence, each lost in their own thoughts. When they arrived, Sophia was lounging on the porch with a book. She looked up and grinned when she saw them.
'Hey, lovebirds. What brings you here?' Sophia teased, closing her book.
Victoria rolled her eyes but couldn't help but smile. 'We need to talk to mum. It's about me and Alec.'
Sophia's eyes widened with interest. 'Ooo, the big talk. Need a wingman?'
Victoria chuckled. 'Something like that. Are you up for helping us convince mum?'
Sophia jumped up from her chair. 'Absolutely. Anything to see her squirm a little. Plus, you know I'm Team Alec.'
Alec gave her a grateful smile. 'Thanks, Soph.'
They walked into the house together, finding Charlotte in the kitchen, preparing dinner. She looked up, surprised to see them all.
'Victoria, Alec, Sophia. What's going on?' Charlotte said, wiping her hands on a dish towel.
'Mum, we need to talk.' Victoria began, her voice steady but nervous. 'It's about Alec and me. We want to be together, and we're asking for your acceptance.'
Charlotte's expression hardened slightly, but she said nothing, waiting for Victoria to continue.
'I know it's been difficult for you to trust him after everything that happened.' Victoria said, her eyes pleading. 'But Alec and I love each other. We've worked through our issues, and we're stronger because of it. We just want your blessing.'
Alec stepped forward, his voice sincere. 'Charlotte, I know I've made mistakes in the past, but I love Victoria with my whole heart. I promise you, I'll do everything in my power to make her happy and keep her safe.'
Charlotte looked between the two of them, her face unreadable. Before she could respond, Sophia jumped in.
'Mum, come on. They're perfect for each other. You know it, I know it. Everyone knows it. Just give them a chance. Alec's a good guy. He makes Vic happy.'
Charlotte sighed, looking at her youngest daughter. 'Sophia, you don't understand how complicated this is.'
Sophia crossed her arms, looking surprisingly mature. 'I understand more than you think, mum. I've seen how much Vic loves Alec and how happy he makes her. You always tell us to follow our hearts, right? Well, this is her heart.'
Charlotte rubbed her temples, clearly conflicted. 'I just worry about you, Victoria. I don't want to see you get hurt.'
Victoria stepped closer to her mother, taking her hands. 'I know, mum. And I appreciate it. But I'm not a little girl anymore. I'm eighteen, and I know what I want. I want Alec. Please, just trust us. We'll make it work. We just need your support.'
Charlotte looked into her daughter's eyes, seeing the determination and love there. She glanced at Alec, who met her gaze steadily, and then at Sophia, who nodded encouragingly.
After what felt like an eternity, Charlotte sighed deeply and nodded. 'Okay. If this is what you truly want, then I'll support you. But, Alec, if you ever put her through anything again...'
'I won't.' Alec said quickly. 'I promise you, I'll take care of her.'
Charlotte smiled faintly, her eyes softening. 'Alright then. You have my blessing.'
Victoria let out a breath she didn't realise she was holding and threw her arms around her mother. 'Thank you, mum. Thank you so much.'
Alec stepped forward, and Charlotte held out her hand. Alec shook it, gratitude shining in his eyes. 'Thank you, Charlotte. I won't let you down.'
Sophia clapped her hands together, grinning widely. 'Group hug, anyone?'
They all laughed, and even Charlotte joined in as they wrapped their arms around each other, the tension finally easing. It wasn't perfect, and there would still be challenges ahead, but for now, they had what they needed. Each other's support.
Later, as they sat down to dinner, their mood was light and cheerful. Alec and Victoria shared a look of relief and happiness, knowing they had taken an important step forward.
As they ate, Sophia couldn't resist one last tease. 'You know, this means Alec has to come to all our family gatherings now. Including the ones with weird uncle Joe.'
Alec chuckled. 'I think I can handle it.'
Victoria laughed, feeling lighter than she had in weeks. 'Welcome to the family, Alec.'
Charlotte smiled at the sight of her daughters and Alec, finally feeling a sense of peace. Maybe, just maybe, everything would turn out just fine.
