Victoria sat on the edge of her bed, staring at the framed photos on her dresser. The images of happier times felt like they belonged to someone else. The door creaked open, Charlotte stepping in, her expression soft and concerned.
'Hey, sweetheart.' Charlotte smiled, sitting down beside her daughter. 'How are you holding up?'
Victoria sighed, her shoulders slumping. 'It's been hard, mum. Everywhere I go, I see him. And everyone else... they look at me like I'm some kind of... I don't know. It's just so overwhelming.'
Charlotte reached out and tucked a strand of hair behind Victoria's ear. 'I can only imagine how difficult this must be for you.'
Victoria's eyes filled with tears. 'I just don't know what to do. I miss him so much, but I know I shouldn't. It was wrong, and now it feels like I'm being punished for caring about someone.'
Charlotte took a deep breath, choosing her words carefully. 'Victoria, I know you loved him. And I believe he cared about you too. But it should never have happened. The power dynamics, the age difference... it's all too complicated and can lead to situations that aren't fair or healthy for either of you.'
Victoria's voice trembled. 'But it felt so real, mum. Like he understood me in ways no one else ever did.'
Charlotte's heart ached for her daughter. 'I understand that, darling. Sometimes we meet people who seem to complete us in ways we didn't know we needed. But just because it feels right doesn't mean it is right.'
Victoria looked down, tears spilling over. 'I cared about him so much. If this is how love always is, I don't want it. I don't want to feel this way ever again.'
Charlotte gently took Victoria's hands in hers. 'Love can be the most beautiful thing in the world, but it can also be incredibly painful. We don't get to choose who we love. Sometimes we love the wrong people, and it feels so right at the same time.'
Victoria sniffled, wiping her tears with the back of her hand. 'So what do I do now? How do I move on from this?'
Charlotte squeezed her hands. 'You take it one day at a time. You lean on the people who love you, who want the best for you. And you allow yourself to feel everything you're feeling without judgement. It's okay to be sad, angry, confused. It's all part of healing.'
Victoria nodded, her voice barely above a whisper. 'It's just so hard, mum.'
Charlotte wrapped her arms around Victoria, holding her close. 'I know, sweetheart. But you're not alone in this. I'm here for you, and so are your friends. You'll get through this, I promise.'
Victoria clung to her mum, her sobs finally breaking free. 'Thank you, mum. I don't know what I'd do without you.'
Charlotte kissed the top of her head. 'You don't have to know right now. Just know that you're loved and and that you're stronger than you think. One day, this will be a memory, and you'll have grown so much from it.'
They sat together in silence, the weight of their conversation hanging in the air. But within that silence was the unspoken bond of a mother's unwavering love for her daughter, and the hope that, in time, healing would come.
