How to …With Brooklyn 2

Today I’m going to go over how to critique someone’s work. I’m going over this because it is easy to see that many are unclear about how to do this.

Step 1

READ the other person’s work. (If you can’t do that you must have skipped my first How to. Plus if you don’t read it how are you to critique it?)

Step 1 part 2

Reread if some parts were unclear to you a second look might clear up any confusion about what was written.

Step 2

Say something Positive! (Even if you hated it. I don’t want you to lie but try it. But there has to be something that was kind of good. Examples: ‘The cover for your story is awesome.’ I liked the names of the characters you used.’ Something like that.)

Step 3

Make a suggestion on how they can Improve. (Notice I didn’t say make a list of negatives. That doesn’t help anybody. Examples: ‘Maybe you can add more detail about the room that they were in.’ ‘I think you should try putting a more realistic spin on things.’)

The reason behind this How to was because of a story I came across. To tell the truth it was god-awful but it did have a good plot. The writing was just horrible. And someone felt the need to go all out on them which was totally unnecessary. Just sayin!
