A sigh of relief escaped me as I finally closed the exhaustive notes, surprised at their meticulous detail. Rarely did he seem attentive during lectures, yet his notes reflected an unexpected diligence. Shutting my own notebook, I pulled out my phone to inform Ollie where he could go to pick up his notes with a pinned location of my job. Weirdly he never replied, he must be busy.
I shoved the notebooks in my bag to make sure I didn't lose Ollie's before my boss asked me to sit behind the front desk while she sorted and put away books that had been returned throughout the week. No one usually comes in for hours and if they do, they just mosey past the front desk and go about their business, so I sat cross-legged on the floor and allowed myself to be absorbed into my current read.
Five chapters later, the sound of the door closing caught my attention, but I paid it no mind. "So is this where you go to escape from reality?" a voice asked, and I looked up at the source with wide eyes before instantly relaxing at the sight of Ollie's face. I didn't know what it was about the guy, but I found myself oddly comfortable around him.
"More often than I should," I admitted as I stood and brushed off my jeans. "Sometimes, fantasy is better than reality." Ollie's eyes softened as he smiled, understanding the sentiment all too well. "I second that. What are you reading?" He rested his head in the palm of his hand as he leaned against the desk, curiosity piqued.
My face instantly turned red as I thought about the scene I just read, the passion and desire between the characters almost palpable in the air. "Uh, it's a fantasy novel." I hesitated, not wanting to admit the truth. "Sometimes, it gets a little steamy."
"I gathered that much. What is it about?" he asked, his voice filled with genuine interest. I shook my head, embarrassed, as I shoved the book underneath the desk. "It's about a world filled with magic, adventure, and hidden secrets."
He chuckled, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "Is it smutty?" He knew the answer, but I could tell he just wanted to hear me say it. "Maybe," I drawled, not wanting to sound too eager, but deep down, I knew that the book had its fair share of passion and desire.
"Don't be embarrassed. I read plenty of them on my own." He reached out his hand and gestured toward himself, "My notes?" I swooped down to my book bag and pulled out his notebook before handing it over to him. "Thank you. If you need any more help, feel free to ask." And with that, Ollie was gone, leaving me to continue my escape into the world of fantasy and adventure.
