I sat in the desk chair, my foot tapping against the floor impatiently. A few moments had passed after I asked Wooyoung to elaborate on what he was saying, but all he did was stare at me. "Are you going to answer the question?" I asked, annoyance lacing my voice.
"No."
"And why the fuck not?" I demanded, my voice raising yet again.
"Why should I? You won't tell me how you feel, so why do I have to?" he countered, his gaze determined. Was he really going to be stubborn about this now?
"Clearly it was important or else you wouldn't have started to say it. What is it, Wooyoung? What makes you so scared to tell me the truth?"
He stared at me again, the silence in the room seeming to never end as I waited for a response. Anger seemed to boil inside of him as I watched his face grow a few shades darker. He scoffed, his eyes still locked on mine, before he said, "Rejection."
I blinked, "What?"
"I said, 'Rejection.' Meaning that if I told you the truth, it gives you the power to reject me and I don't want that."
I stared at him in shock. Rejection? Why would that concern him? There was no reason to be scared that I'd do such a thing because there was no— Everything clicked into place as I thought about why he would be scared of being rejected by me. He had feelings for me. It all made sense now. The teasing and bickering. He was doing those things to be close to me. It was his excuse to talk to me.
The thoughts inside my head clashed together violently and a part of me wanted to reassure him that that wouldn't happen but another part of wasn't sure if it was true. Would I reject him? I had already admitted to myself that I found the man attractive, but did it go any further than that?
Memories flashed through my head of all of the encounters we'd had and I realized that I had enjoyed all of them. From the first time we met to being locked in the room with him, I had enjoyed it all. My eyes searched his and it was as if every negative thing I'd ever thought about Wooyoung disappeared. All I could see now was the man baring his soul to me and struggling with it.
"I wouldn't have rejected you, Woo. Because..." I took a deep breath, my heart pounding in my chest as I prepared myself for what I was about to say. "Because-"
"Because you have feelings for me, too, don't you?" he asked, a knowing glint in his eyes.
"Yes," I sighed in defeat. There was no point in denying it anymore. With the way my heart constricted in my chest, I knew I was a goner.
My heart raced as I stared at him, his words ringing in my ears. We had to get out of here, and fast. Without another word, I strode to the door with him following closely behind. I knocked softly on the door, feeling the weight of anticipation heavy in my chest. Footsteps grew closer from the other side and I turned to Wooyoung, silently pleading for him to stay quiet.
"We're besties now, let us out," I said with a forced smile.
Wooyoung shot me a puzzled look before turning back to the door. "Is he dead?" Laney's voice called through the wood.
I bit down on my tongue to hold back a harsh response and instead sweetened my tone. "Laney, babe, let me out. I didn't kill him."
Whispers and hushed voices could be heard from inside before keys jingled and the doorknob turned. The door swung open to reveal our friends huddled together, their expressions a mix of shock and confusion. My face remained stoic as I looked them over, Wooyoung standing silently behind me.
I held out my hand towards Laney with a raised brow. "Phone and my keys please," I stated calmly.
She handed them over without protest and I cleared my throat before turning away. Grasping Wooyoung's hand tightly, I pulled him along as we made our way to the front door. Just before closing it behind us, I couldn't resist one final jab at Laney and Hongjoong.
"Count your fucking days," I sneered before lifting my free hand and flipping them off.
"Are you leaving? You said you'd stay for dinner," Laney whined after us.
"Have dinner by your-fucking-self," I shot back before slamming the door shut with a satisfying click. With Wooyoung still by my side, I led him to my car and we quickly got in.
