I was certain Laney was working at the bookstore today, and I longed to see her radiant smile again. It had been ages since we'd hung out, her time consumed by working on a project with Ollie. Though she'd had to give me a few rainchecks, which I understood, I missed her lively company terribly. I knew she cherished spending time with her friend Ollie, so who was I to deny her that joy? Yet I was restless not being able to gaze upon her beautiful face.
I pushed open the door to the cozy bookstore, pausing by the counter to glance around until I spotted her. She stood facing away from me, focused on shelving books along a towering case. I began walking towards her, only to halt as her melodic voice rang out. Ducking behind the adjacent bookcase, I realized she was chatting with Ollie.
"With the sketches done, how long do you think the sewing will take?" he asked.
"A couple days, but for sure by week's end," she replied cheerfully.
"Okay, sounds good to me," Ollie said.
"Are you leaving soon?" Laney questioned.
"I might linger an hour or so," Ollie drawled lazily.
"Why? I thought you had to speak with a professor?" Laney asked, confusion coloring her tone.
"I do, but I'm trying to put it off until the last minute. If I go to campus, I might run into Wooyoung," Ollie sighed heavily.
"Oh come on, Ollie, it can't be that bad!" Laney giggled, her laugh like windchimes.
"Dude, it is!" I heard Ollie's chair scrape as he sat up straight. "The other day someone came up telling me it was cute that me and Wooyoung were dating because we looked good together."
"Oh my god, really?" Laney tried in vain to restrain her pealing laughter.
"It's not funny!" Ollie groaned. "How many people think we're dating?! It's all his fault."
Still chuckling, Laney teased, "Oliver Kai, don't be so dramatic."
"You don't understand how annoying it is. And to make matters worse, he's fucking cute!" Ollie whined pitifully.
"Wait, you think he's cute?" Laney asked, shock evident in her tone.
"Unfortunately, the man's fine as hell, but he drives me nuts," Ollie complained. I peered between the books to see him dramatically drop his forehead against the table.
Having eavesdropped enough, I quietly slipped outside and decided to text Laney later about visiting her.
