"That's what I said," Amaiah exclaims as we walk around the park by her street. After last night, we both decided we needed a peaceful morning walk."So they're staying for another few months?" I ask, referring to her parents.
"Yeah, I guess. I stopped caring, to be honest," she says sadly. I give her an empathetic smile, swinging her arm with mine as we walked.
"They'll come around..." I stated, "I find it hard to meet someone our age with stable parent relationships these days, so at least we're not alone."
"It sucks, though," Amaiah huffed, "We're just kids."
"Yeah," I agreed, watching the pavement pass underneath us, "It's tough."
Amaiah and I were quiet for most of the walk. I realized I needed the silence to relax, but all of my relief disappeared the second we made it back to her street.
There was a run-down black car parked on the curb across the street, and a too-familiar figure leaned against it next to a big man with tattoos. I recognized the girl from the security footage of Rika's house immediately. Her hood was dropped, and I could see her well-structured face. However, a scar was etched beneath one of her eyes, and I found myself gripping Amaiah's hand.
The guy next to the girl stood with his arms crossed, and I noticed a tear drop tattoo on his face.
Oh, God. Not good. Not good.
"Who the fuck is that?" Amaiah whispered, both of our steps slowing.
"I think it's Rika's cousin," I responded quietly, not taking my eyes off either of them as we approached Amaiah's lawn.
"What?" Amaiah questioned, shocked at my answer.
"Just get inside," I muttered, something in my gut telling me to hurry up.
However, the second I stepped foot onto Amaiah's porch, the guy started full-speed toward us. I watched the girl urge him forward, and my body snapped into motion.
"Inside!" I shouted at Amaiah, who was unlocking the door as quick as possible.
We sprinted into the house, and I slammed the door behind us, locking it immediately.
"Get the back door, I'll check the windows!"
I barricaded the door with a chair like that was gonna stop that huge man. I raced over to the windows, closing all the curtains and double-checking the locks.
There was a banging at the door, and I could faintly hear Amaiah on the phone.
I turned around to see her shaking against the wall, her breathing rapid.
"Axel, there's somebody trying to break into the house!" she whispered into the call.
Well, at least he picked up the phone. Maybe he wasn't going to break up with her.
