I swept the barbershop floors while humming to the music Leo put on. It had been a while since the barbershop had a rush of customers ever since immigration investigated the place.

But today had picked up, walk-ins and appointments both.

Earlier this morning, Aunt Jenny had made breakfast and insisted I tell her about all the fun things I had done this summer.

Unfortunately, she trapped me into telling her who I was staying with for the past few weeks. Luckily, Nick wasn't in the room, and I don't think Miguel heard. However, even Jenny seemed to recognize the name "Eros". She didn't know much, but she was just grateful that I had a place to stay.

I helped her with the gardens in the backyard as a form of paying my rent, but I left out that part. My knees hurt, but it was worth it.

Emilio was coming over for dinner, and I was still trying to think of ways to explain why I was staying at their house.

As of right now, he still thinks I'm living on my own at an apartment.

Maybe he wouldn't have to figure it out. Maybe we were just spending time with family...?

I don't know...I hated lying to him. Maybe I should just tell him the truth.

"Can you replace the combs, Amorette?" Leo asks, finishing up his customer's trim. I nodded, putting the broom up and heading to the back.

I was searching for the new box of combs when I heard the bell above the door ring, and I wondered if Leo had another appointment or if it was a walk-in.

There was this special liquid that kept the combs sanitized and sterile, but after so long, even that gets ineffective. And gross.

Ew.

I don't think I've ever actually used the same comb on two different people. It's completely ethical in barbershop terms, but I thought it was absolutely disgusting, no matter what blue-green substance kept the germs away.

I carried the box out on my hip and went to each chair, replacing the cones and avoiding the strange liquid.

"Hey, Amorette, these came for you," Leo said, snapping me out of my focus. I glanced up, seeing him holding a vase of light pink flowers—Delilahs, I think. There was a lady outside of the barbershop, and she was walking back toward her vehicle like she had just dropped them off. Her van had a large florist emblem painted on it, so I assumed it was her business.

"Huh," I wondered out loud, setting the box down on my chair. I walked over, admiring the beautiful collection of plants. Leo had a knowing look on his face as he looked down at the little white paper attached to it.

I narrowed my eyes at his nosey actions.

"Let me see," I said as he set the vase down on the counter next to the cash register. I opened up the little note, reading the typed letter.
