My phone rang out for a third time, and I sighed in annoyance.

I debated calling him again, but I knew I would probably get the same response.

I still did it anyway.

I waited and waited, and once I got to the fourth ring, I thought for sure this was a waste of time.

I felt a moment of regret for this whole situation, hating myself for choosing this option. But I needed to...for myself.

However, right as I was about to shut my phone off, the call goes through and Eros picks up.

"Angel?"

Oh.

I didn't really plan what I was going to say, I just knew that I should call him. I felt bad. Not guilty, just bad.

"Where are you?"

It was a question that wouldn't give away where I was, and it kept him in the dark for now. I needed to be the one to tell him instead of him finding out on his own. But I think I might be a little late for that.

There was a long pause before he answered.

"Downtown," he said.

"Okay. Can we talk or are you busy?" I asked, hoping he would let me speak for a second.

"Talk."

Well, okay.

"I'm going to stay with my cousins on the Westside for a few days," I quickly said, "It's safe there, and you can even come see it for yourself if you want."

It was a risky step, but I needed to take it in order to fully trust him. I felt like there was something between us, something that blocked me from seeing what I was supposed to see.

"The next time you plan to make a great escape, make sure it's not me you're dealing with," he said at first, "If you're going to stay with them, I would like you to call me at least twice a day."

Oh.

Of course he knew. He was Augustine Eros.

"I will, and I'm sorry."

"Why didn't you tell me you needed to visit them? It was not my intention to hold you captive," he added.

"You left before I could...I was going to ask you what I should do," I replied, hating how pathetic I sounded.

I waited for him to speak, but he never did.

"I'm sorry I went behind your back, but I needed you, Eros. And maybe your reason for leaving was important, but I can't just rely on you for everything," I admitted.

"Why not?" he suggested.

"I won't be my own person if I'm co-dependent on you. You won't like me if that's who I am," I told him honestly.
