I tapped my foot impatiently as we waited for the nurse to say it was okay to see Danny. I looked to Adam, who was sitting in the chair beside me and gave him a worried smile to reassure him that in the midst of this tragic event, I was doing okay. I also looked to Todd and the two children who were sitting next to him which I recognized as Danny's siblings that I had met a long time ago at the Barbecue when I first met Danny and everyone else. They seems oblivious to the situation, like they knew their older brother was going to be fine.
Even though we knew Danny was going to be okay, I was still worried. They wouldn't tell us exactly what parts of his bodies were hurt or anything like that except for the fact they were doing surgery on his leg at the moment. Only Todd knows. And by his impatient expression, it didn't look too good.
We do know what happened, though. The police just left after they got some information and told us what had happened at the scene. They told us Danny was at a four-way stop and someone wasn't paying attention and went when it was Danny's turn to go. They hit the driver's side and the car was totaled. The other person who caused the accident was lucky and only got a few bruises and scratches and a minor concussion from the air bag.
It seemed like hours just sitting there. Worry was evident in all of us- Especially Todd.
"Are you okay?" Adam asked quietly just loud enough for me to hear.
I nodded. "Are you?"
He shrugged and gave me a half smile. I smiled back and rubbed his shoulder for comfort.
"He'll be okay," I reassured. I was really trying to convince myself more than I was trying to convince him.
The hours ticked by slowly as we waited for the door to swing open and the nurse to walk through. Though every time I felt like it was going to happen, it never did. I looked down to the arm rest which separated me and Adam. He had just recently intertwined our hands together and gave mine a gentle squeeze now and then. The bond between our hands was the only thing that connected us together. I smiled at the gesture of affection, since it was the first, and decided to lean my head on his shoulder.
Both of our hands were kind of sweaty because of the mixture of worry and awkwardness. I could tell he was feeling a bit awkward too but neither of us decided to do anything to prevent it.
Suddenly, The doorknob clicked as the door to the waiting room swung open and the nurse walked in.
"Danny's awake and ready to see you now," The nurse told us. Finally.
I looked up at the clock. 10:37pm. I can't believe we've been waiting for so long. All three of us stood up and followed her down the hall to room 305. From the doorway I saw a person lying there, but he was almost unrecognizable. Danny's face was cut in many places and you could clearly see the stitches they put in them. His nose and a few parts of his face were bruised and his lip was slightly swollen. His leg was in a cast, elevated in the air and so was his arm, which rested at his side. It really was a depressing sight to see him just lying there, beaten and bruised.
"Hey..." I said happily, trying to lighten the mood as we walked in the room.
"Hey, guys," He greeted, a smile growing on his face.
A different nurse, who looked oddly familiar, was by his side with a clip board doing who knows what.
"Is there anything we can do to make you feel any better?" I asked as I took a seat down beside him on the bed. Adam stood beside us, which meant we had to detach hands, and Todd stood on the other side next to the nurse. The little boy stood right near Danny's head while the little girl struggled to get up on the other side of the bed to her older brother.
