Song for the chapter: Dollhouse by Lily Rose Depp and The Weeknd
Maddy's POV:
I lay sprawled on my bed, staring at the ceiling, feeling a mix of satisfaction and guilt churn in my stomach. The picture I posted was already making waves, exacting my revenge. Had Jeremiah not broken up with me so publicly and humiliatingly, I would not have done this. Yet, the thrill of vengeance quickly turned into a hollow ache.
The familiar sound of my father's car pulling into the driveway sent a shiver down my spine. The heavy thud of his footsteps echoed through the house, a harbinger of the storm to come. My heart pounded in my chest, each beat a reminder of the inevitable confrontation. I heard my parents' voices rising in the living room, their words indistinguishable but their tone unmistakable.
A soft knock interrupted my thoughts, and the maid, Rosa, entered hesitantly. "Miss Madeleine your father wants to see you in the living room," she said, her eyes avoiding mine. She knew what was coming too. I took a deep breath, trying to steady my nerves. There was no avoiding this.
As I made my way to the living room, the tension in the air was palpable. My father stood in the center of the room, his face a mask of fury. My mother sat on the edge of the sofa, her eyes fixed on the floor, refusing to meet my gaze.
"So, now you've started taking drugs now?" my father spat, his voice dripping with disdain. "That was the only thing left for you to ruin."
I swallowed hard, my mouth dry. "I'm sorry, Dad. It was my first time, I promise. It won't happen again."
"Do you think I'm stupid? I know it wasn't your first time," he snapped, his eyes boring into mine. "Where was Jeremiah when you were doing this? Didn't he try to stop you?"
My heart felt like it was about to explode out of my chest. This was it. The moment I had been dreading. "Dad, I have to tell you something. Jeremiah and I... we've broken up. It was a mutual decision."
The room fell silent, the air thick with tension. Then, in a blur of motion, his hand struck my face with a force that sent me reeling. Pain exploded across my cheek, tears springing to my eyes. My mother didn't move, didn't even look up. She just sat there, a silent witness to my humiliation.
"You can't even handle a guy now? What use are you?" my father shouted, his face inches from mine. "You're worthless to us. You don't study, you take drugs, you drink, you vape, you smoke. You have no future. Do you think all the luxuries you have come easily? We work our asses off to provide for you, and you can't even respect that."
Anger and frustration welled up inside me, threatening to burst. "So what do you expect me to do? Crawl back to Jeremiah and beg him not to break up with me because my family needs their political power? I don't want your luxuries. They mean nothing without your love and support. You don't care about my emotional stability. You've never wondered why I'm not good in studies or why I spend so much money. It's the only way I can deal with the unrealistic expectations you place on me. You've always treated me like a pawn for your business. One day, I'm going to run away from this house."
Another slap landed on my cheek, harder this time. "Oh, you want to run away now? Go ahead. What will you do without money, without credit cards? No one will take you in. You should be grateful for everything we've given you, you ungrateful litte slut."
I didn't hear the rest. I turned and fled back to my room, tears streaming down my face. Once inside, I collapsed onto my bed, sobbing into my pillow. The weight of my family's expectations and their lack of genuine love crushed me. I felt so alone, so unloved, and so used. The luxuries that surrounded me felt like a gilded cage, trapping me in a life that wasn't mine.
