Today we have a cover from the agency with us in the rooms, so I'm just giving her a little run through
"So just let me know if there is anything else you need help with"
"Yeah, I will do. Oh, I really like
Your necklace" the woman smiles back at me,
"Oh, thank you" I smile. The necklace I'm wearing is a drop heart y shape one which happens to match with someone else's.
"It's really pretty. Does it have any meaning behind it?"
"Oh. Well it reminds me of my, friend" I reply holding the necklace. "She wears the same one so it's just, something we both have"
"Aww that is so sweet" I do love having the necklace with me. It's like a little reminder of Mia when she isn't around. It's a comfort.

"Yeah. So what are you studying at uni?" I ask,
"Oh, uh, psychology" she replies,
"Oh great. And you do agency work on the side?" I question
"Yeah. It helps pay for it. I mean alot of my classmates have jobs at the uni but I actually quite like getting away from all that" she explains
"I think that's wonderful. Oh, I've just got to pop over there and do a nappy if you're okay just to stay with this group here"
"Yeah sure, no problem" she smiles.

...

I walk back over to the cover once the parent has left with her daughter. I overheard the conversation slightly and she looks very confused
"Uhm?"
"Yes. You did just get judged for working in childcare" I confirm.
"I don't get it. Cause I'm taking care of her child?" She questions
"That doesn't matter. To a lot of people, childcare is just seen as a lesser job" it happened a lot more than you'd think.
"Wow. She really did just think less of me didn't she? Just because I'm working here? That is wild"
"Yeah. It isn't uncommon"
"Wait. Other parents do that too?"
"Yeah. I mean there are one or two parents that's like to let us know they think less of us because of the career we've chosen" I reply,
"But the career you've chosen is taking care of their child?"
"Oh, I know. We're literally helping to raise the next generation but you know, despite having a PhD, irony is still not their strong suit" I reply.

Being looked down on for working with children, despite being ridiculous, is not uncommon. It happens all the time. But I try not to let it bother me. I love working with kids and helping them grow and learn. It's what I like to do. And I'm not going to let someone else's opinion stop me from doing something I love.

Huh. I should take my own advice more.
