After returning home from the hospital, the house felt different—full of new life and endless possibilities. Austin and Lucy settled into their nightly routine with baby Lori, finding a delicate balance between exhaustion and bliss. One night, after ensuring Lori was sound asleep in her bassinet, they both drifted off to sleep.
---
In his dream, Austin found himself in the backyard of his childhood home, standing under the old orange tree. Baby Lori was cradled in his arms, her tiny fingers grasping at his shirt. He looked down at her, marveling at her blue eyes and wispy blonde hair—traits she inherited from both him and his mother.
"Hey there, little one," Austin whispered. "This tree holds so many memories. Your grandma and I used to pick oranges here every summer."
As if on cue, the scent of ripe oranges filled the air. Austin smiled, remembering the countless afternoons he spent with his mother, reaching for the highest branches, their laughter echoing through the yard.
"We'd sit right here," he continued, lowering himself to the ground with Lori, "and eat the juiciest oranges you've ever tasted. Your grandma always said the best ones were at the top."
A gentle breeze rustled the leaves, and Austin looked up to see his mother standing before him, as vibrant as he remembered.
"Mom?" he said, his voice filled with emotion.
Lori-Anne smiled warmly. "May I hold her?"
Austin carefully passed Lori to his mother, watching as she cradled the baby with the same tenderness he remembered from his own childhood.
"She has your eyes," Lori-Anne said softly, "and your father's smile."
Austin nodded, his throat tight with emotion. "I wish you could be here to watch her grow up, Mom. There's so much I want to tell her about you."
Lori-Anne looked at him, her eyes filled with love and pride. "You'll tell her, Austin. And you'll show her through your actions. I see how gentle and caring you are with her—just like you learned from me."
Austin felt a wave of emotion wash over him. "I promise, Mom. I'll always protect her and be there for her, no matter what. Just like you were for me."
Lori-Anne handed baby Lori back to Austin, who cradled her close, inhaling her sweet baby scent. "Remember the time I fell out of this tree trying to reach that last orange?" he asked, chuckling at the memory.
His mother laughed. "You were so determined. But I was right there to catch you, wasn't I?"
Austin nodded, looking down at Lori. "And I'll always be there to catch you, little one. No matter what life throws at us."
Lori-Anne placed a hand on Austin's shoulder. "You're going to be an amazing father, Austin. You have so much love to give."
As the dream began to fade, Lori-Anne leaned in and kissed Austin's forehead. "Take care of your family, and remember, I'm always with you."
With that, she blew him a kiss and disappeared, leaving Austin with a sense of peace and renewed purpose. He looked down at Lori, her blue eyes—so like his mother's—gazing up at him trustingly.
"I love you, little one," he whispered. "And I'll always be here for you, just like Grandma was for me."
---
Austin woke up, tears streaming down his face. He felt a profound sense of peace and connection, knowing that his mother’s love and wisdom were still with him. He returned to bed, carefully tucking Lori back into her bassinet, and lay down beside Lucy, who instinctively snuggled closer.
As he closed his eyes, Austin felt a renewed sense of purpose. He knew that, with Lucy by his side and Lori in his arms, they would create a lifetime of beautiful memories and cherished moments. His mother's legacy of love and strength would guide him every step of the way.
