Austin woke up to the soft warmth of sunlight filtering through the bedroom curtains, casting a golden hue over everything. He blinked a few times, feeling the unfamiliar but welcome sensation of being fully rested. His body, which had felt like it was weighed down for days, now felt lighter, energized even. A smile tugged at the corners of his lips. He was back.
Careful not to disturb Lucy, who was still asleep next to him, he slipped quietly out of bed. The cool wooden floor beneath his feet was refreshing as he made his way to the bathroom. Once inside, he turned on the shower, the sound of the water filling the room like a soothing rhythm. As the warm water cascaded over him, he let out a contented sigh, feeling like the remnants of his illness were being washed away. Today was going to be a good day.
After the shower, he dried off and slipped into a comfortable t-shirt, his favorite pair of worn jeans, and a casual pair of Nike shoes. He felt like himself again. His mind began to race with ideas—maybe they could do something fun as a family. The kids had been at his dad’s for a couple of days, and he missed their laughter filling the house.
As he stepped back into the bedroom, he saw that Lucy had woken up. She was sitting up in bed, stretching lazily with her hair falling in soft waves around her face. She looked over at him with a sleepy smile.
“Good morning, baby,” Austin said softly, walking over to her and leaning down to place a gentle kiss on her lips.
Lucy’s eyes lit up as she returned the kiss. “Good morning, baby. How are you feeling?” she asked, her voice warm and full of affection.
Austin smiled, feeling genuinely grateful. “Much better. A thousand percent better, actually. I was thinking we could get dressed, pick up the kids, and maybe take them to the park for a bit. We could invite Vicki and Dad too, make it a fun family day."
Lucy beamed at the suggestion, her eyes crinkling at the corners in that way that always melted Austin’s heart. “Let’s do it! I miss our little monsters,” she said with a playful chuckle.
Austin laughed, the sound filling the room and feeling good after days of being cooped up in bed. “Yeah, me too,” he agreed. “Alright then, get dressed, and we’ll head out.”
Lucy tossed the covers aside and swung her legs out of bed, the morning sun catching the glint of her wedding ring as she stood up. Austin watched her for a moment, his heart swelling with love and gratitude. It was in these small, everyday moments that he realized just how lucky he was—how much they had built together, and how even after all these years, they still found joy in the simple things.
As Lucy disappeared into the closet to pick out her clothes, Austin’s mind drifted to the kids. He could already picture their faces lighting up when they saw him and Lucy—Lori’s big, excited grin, Timmy’s little arms reaching out for a hug, and Noah and Mia racing to tell them all about the adventures they’d had with Grandma and Grandpa.
He couldn’t wait. Today wasn’t just a beautiful day—it was a chance to make more memories with the people he loved most.
After finishing breakfast, Lucy and Austin got ready for the day, their excitement growing as they prepared to take the kids, along with Vicki and David, to the park. They packed everything they needed— a picnic basket overflowing with snacks and drinks, their phones, chargers, and Austin's camera with extra batteries. After a quick check to make sure they hadn’t forgotten anything, they locked up the house and headed out.
The drive was perfect. The sun was shining brightly, casting a warm glow over the streets, while a cool breeze swept in through the open windows. It was one of those days that felt made for family adventures. Austin glanced over at Lucy, who smiled contentedly, her hair lightly tousled by the wind.
