Austin and Lucy woke up to the sound of seagulls and gentle waves. The morning sun streamed through the cottage windows, casting a warm glow across their bed."Good morning, beautiful," Austin murmured, pulling Lucy closer and placing a soft kiss on her forehead.Lucy smiled, her eyes still closed. "Mmm, good morning. What's the plan for today?""First stop, breakfast," Austin replied, his stomach growling on cue. "I heard about this great bakery nearby."They got ready for the day, the excitement of their adventure ahead palpable in the air. Hand in hand, they walked to the Malibu Country Mart Bakery. As they settled at a table by the window, Lucy inhaled deeply. "Oh, it smells amazing in here.""It does," Austin agreed, perusing the menu. "What are you thinking of getting?""I'm leaning towards the avocado toast. You?"Austin grinned. "Breakfast burrito with extra bacon. You know me."After placing their orders, they sipped their coffee and planned their day."So, what's first on the agenda?" Lucy asked."I thought we could start with The Getty Villa," Austin suggested. "I've heard the architecture is incredible."Lucy's eyes lit up. "That sounds perfect!"At The Getty Villa, they wandered through the exhibits, marveling at the ancient art and architecture."Hey, Luce," Austin called, striking a pose next to a statue. "How do I compare?"Lucy laughed, snapping a picture. "Hmm, I think I prefer the real thing."As they overlooked the ocean from the villa's terrace, Lucy leaned into Austin. "This place is breathtaking," she said softly.Austin wrapped his arm around her. "Not as breathtaking as you."Next, they drove to Saddlerock Ranch vineyard. During the wine tasting, Austin surprised Lucy with his knowledge."Since when did you become such a wine expert?" Lucy teased.Austin winked. "I may have done some research before our trip. Wanted to impress my wife."In the afternoon, they visited El Matador State Beach. As they explored the dramatic rock formations, Lucy suddenly called out, "Race you to that big rock!"Austin laughed, chasing after her. "No fair, you got a head start!"They collapsed on the sand, breathless and laughing. "I haven't run like that in years," Lucy said, still catching her breath."Me neither," Austin agreed. "Maybe we should do this more often."As the sun began to set, they made their way to the Malibu Lagoon Museum."Look," Lucy pointed excitedly. "Isn't that where they filmed that scene from your favorite movie?"Austin's eyes widened in recognition. "You're right! We should have a movie marathon when we get home, featuring all the films shot here in Malibu."Lucy nodded enthusiastically. "That's a great idea! We can relive our trip through the movies."Their day of exploration complete, they decided to take an evening walk along the shore. The setting sun painted the sky in vibrant oranges and pinks, reflecting off the calm ocean surface. As they walked hand in hand, Austin grew quiet. Lucy sensed the shift in his mood and gently prompted, "What's on your mind, love?"Austin took a deep breath. "I've been thinking about mom a lot lately. Even though it's been over ten years since she passed, I still find myself struggling with it sometimes."Lucy stopped, turning to face Austin and taking both his hands in hers. "Oh, Austin," she said softly, her eyes filled with compassion. "It's okay to still feel that way. Grief doesn't have an expiration date."She pulled him into a tight embrace. "Your mom would be so proud of the man you've become, Austin. The wonderful husband, the amazing father. She lives on through you and the memories you cherish."Austin tightened his arms around Lucy. "Thank you," he murmured. "I don't know what I'd do without you."Lucy cupped Austin's face in her hands. "You're strong, Austin. And it's okay to lean on me when you need to. I'm always here for you, just like you're always there for me."As they resumed their walk, Austin felt lighter. The memory of his mother, while still tinged with sadness, was now wrapped in the warmth of Lucy's love and support."You know," Austin said as they neared their cottage, "today has been perfect. Thank you for always knowing exactly what I need."Lucy squeezed his hand. "That's what partners are for. I love you, Austin.""I love you too, Lucy. More than words can say."They ended their day feeling closer than ever, grateful for the memories they'd made and the strong bond they shared.
As Austin and Lucy continued their walk along the shoreline, the gentle lapping of waves against the sand stirred memories of another special day on this very beach.
