A few days after their conversation, Austin picked up the phone to call Ashley, eager to invite her over for a quiet family dinner. He wanted to create a warm atmosphere where they could celebrate her pregnancy together with Lucy, their dad David, and stepmom Vicki.
When Ashley answered, her voice was cheerful. “Hey, Austin! How’s it going?”
“Hey! I was wondering if you’d like to come over for dinner this weekend? Just a quiet family gathering—Lucy, Dad, Vicki, and me,” he suggested, hoping to see her face light up.
“That sounds great!” Ashley replied, but Austin could hear a hint of worry in her tone.
“Are you okay?” he asked, picking up on her unease. “You sound a bit off.”
There was a pause on the other end before Ashley sighed. “Well, I haven’t told Dad about the pregnancy yet,” she admitted, her voice trembling slightly. “I’m worried he’ll be upset, especially since my boyfriend and he don’t really get along.”
Austin felt a wave of empathy wash over him. He understood the complexities of family dynamics all too well. “I get it, Ash. That’s a tough situation,” he said gently. “But you know Dad loves you, right? He might surprise you.”
“I know, but I just… I don’t want to add more tension,” Ashley confessed. “I’m already feeling so overwhelmed.”
“Listen,” Austin said, trying to comfort her the best he could over the phone, “you don’t have to face this alone. We’re all family, and we can support each other. Maybe if you tell him about the baby, it could help bridge the gap between him and your boyfriend.”
Ashley took a deep breath. “You really think so?”
“Yeah, I do. This is a huge moment in your life. It’s something to celebrate. If he sees how happy you are, it might change his perspective,” Austin encouraged. “And I’ll be there for you, no matter what.”
“Thanks, Austin. That means a lot,” she said, her voice softening. “I just want everything to go smoothly.”
“We’ll figure it out together,” he reassured her. “How about we talk more before dinner? Maybe I can help you come up with a good way to break the news.”
“Okay, I’d like that,” she replied, sounding a bit more at ease. “I really appreciate you being there for me.”
“Of course. That’s what family is for,” Austin said, feeling a sense of determination to support his sister through this.
After they hung up, Austin couldn’t shake the feeling of concern for Ashley. He knew that the dinner would be a pivotal moment for her, and he hoped it would bring their family closer together. With a plan forming in his mind, he felt ready to help Ashley navigate this new chapter in her life, one step at a time.
A Confrontation of Emotions
A little while after his conversation with Ashley, Austin found himself back in his office at Heartland Productions, immersed in the script he was working on. The rhythmic tapping of his fingers on the keyboard was suddenly interrupted by a knock on the door.
“Come in,” he called out, looking up from his laptop.
The door opened to reveal Ashley, her face streaked with tears and her expression a mix of anger and distress. Austin’s heart sank as he quickly got up from his chair and walked over to her.
“Ash, what’s wrong?” he asked, concern flooding his voice.
Without a word, Ashley burst into tears, her emotions spilling over. “Dad came over,” she managed to say between sobs. “He ran into my boyfriend at the store, and they got into a heated argument. In the middle of the fight, my boyfriend told him about the pregnancy.”
