Avantika's Pov
When you realise you want to spend the rest of your life with that person, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.
The last rays of the setting sun painted the sky in hues of orange and purple, mirroring the warmth blooming inside me. I closed the book, the words on the page blurring as my thoughts drifted to him. Six months since I last met him. It felt like a lifetime, and yet, like the blink of an eye.
I saw him on the screen, his face illuminated by the stage lights, the crowd cheering his name. He looked so confident, so accomplished, the 'Best Business Leader in Asia' My heart swelled with pride. He had missed the 'Businessman of the Year' award, but that only fueled his determination. He would get it next year, I knew. He was relentless, driven, and I loved him for it.
Our families had started preparing for our wedding which is scheduled at the end of this month that is just in three weeks. It was a surprise for me, he had to go to NYC for a business trip and just for a few stolen hours. He'd chosen a flight through Delhi, a detour that allowed him to hold my hand again, to tell me about the date, to see the joy bloom on my face.
Flashback, Six months ago
It was evening, the lab buzzing with a low hum of activity. I was packing my things, the last few hours blending into a haze of data analysis and caffeine. A chilly blast of wind, the first whispers of winter, rushed through the open window, carrying with it a familiar scent. It was his cologne - the one I secretly adored. I took a deep breath, holding the scent for a moment, and let out a sigh.
"I miss him" I murmured, the words more to myself than anyone else. I grabbed my purse and headed out, the list of things I needed to do swirling in my head.
The elevator doors opened, and I stepped into the crisp evening air. My mind raced, replaying the day's events. As I turned to head towards my car, my breath caught in my throat.
The sleek black Mercedes Maybach was there, but it wasn't the car that held my attention. There he was standing, his tall figure framed against the gleaming metal.
He was wearing a sapphire blue high-neck sweater, paired with faded jeans and black boots, a look that was effortlessly cool. His hair, usually perfectly styled, had a few strands falling over his forehead, just like I'd described during one of our late-night calls. He'd actually done it, and a smile bloomed on my face. His hands were tucked into his pockets, his lips curved into a soft, knowing smile, and his brown eyes were fixed on me. He had a hint of stubble on his face, just as I'd mentioned in our video call earlier that day, telling him I liked the way it looked on him.
I didn't know how long I stood there, my heart pounding like a drum solo, my mind wrestling with disbelief. His eyes held a mischievous glint, and he winked at me, pulling me out of my daze. I blinked, trying to process everything. He was really there, standing right in front of me.
A joyous laugh escaped my lips, and like a teenager, I ran towards him. He chuckled, his arms opening wide, and I literally jumped into his embrace. My arms went around his neck, my face burying itself in the crook of his neck. He held me tight, my feet inches off the ground, his arms strong and reassuring around my waist.
"I didn't know I'd be greeted like this, or I would have come sooner" he murmured, his voice a warm caress near my ear.
"Are you really real?" I whispered, the question tumbling out of me. It was all too surreal, too good to be true. I had never expected him to actually be here, in person, like this. But as they say, unexpected things are often the most beautiful.
