Joel POV

A large clap of thunder following closely after a blinding flash of lighting catches me severely off guard, dropping the shield I had been painting our coat of arms onto. Heaving in a deep breath to calm my now racing heart rate, I pick up the shield, propping it against the wall, then pacing around my bed towards the door, I enter out into the hallway.

"Oi Grian, Jimmy!" I called out with no response. Shrugging I knock on the F/W door, but hearing no answer, I open it, revealing her dimly lit room.

"Y/N?" I speak quietly. That's odd. Striding into the room, I yank open the F/C curtains, unveiling the dark and beautiful night sky. Turning back to face her furniture, I grow slightly worried, my eyebrows furrow as I process her missing presence. Jogging back out into the hall, leaving the door ajar, I located the oak ladder leading to the roof. Scaling it quickly I heave myself onto the new level, glancing around briefly for any figures in the dim lightning from torches surrounding. What the hell?

"Grian!? Jimmy!?" I yell out, becoming evidently desperate for a response. "Y/N!?" Running over to the far edge, overlooking the forest closest to the clockers, a few paces to the side of Bread Bridge, I only see darkness. I wait a few moments, turning to leave and search elsewhere when I spot a figure stumbling out of the dense forest line, their H/C catching the light of the moon, and my eye.

"Y/N!" I cry out, catching her attention before she collapses to her knees, swaying dangerously. Bolting back to the ladder, descending it, and running to the entrance out of the mansion closest to her, I cry out her name again, watching her take dizzying steps towards me, having gotten to her feet during my haste. Colliding at a much slower pace into each other, her knees give way and she collapses completely into my arms. I carefully sink to my knees, keeping her pressed against my chest, my hands cradling her head.

"Hey, hey, you're alright, love." I whisper as she shakes with sobs and cold. Hurriedly, I remove my leather jacket and place it around her shoulders, rubbing my hands up and down her arms in an attempt to warm her as she buries her face in the crook of my neck. I wait a few moments, continuing my actions as she slowly collects herself, wrapping arms around my neck to hug me. I wrap my own arms tightly around her figure, burying my face and nose into her sweet smelling hair. Her breathing becomes even, her body continuing to shake but significantly less severely.

"What happened?" I ask, running one of my hands fingers through her semi knotted hair, untangling it as gently as possible. She shakes her head. "Alright...take a moment." I don't pry, opting instead to hold her tightly to me. A few more minutes pass before two loud voices reach my ears. Turning my head slightly, I see the red undershirt topped by a leather jacket of Grian, and the ripped sleeved leather vest over a blue shirt of Jimmy.

"Joel!! Y/N!!" They both yell to us, picking up their pace from a jog into a run. Once they were close enough, sliding down onto their knees, both collided into us, wrapping arms around our two figures, creating a small huddle.

"What happened!?"

"Are you alright!?" Both voices were filled with concern and sympathy. I felt Y/N nod her head, a fresh wave of tears streaming down her face.

"I-I..."

"Hey, take your time love." I assure her, planting a small kiss to the side of her head. She reigns in a breath, taking a moment to compose her thoughts.

"I-I got ambushed..."

"W-what!?" We all pull back, still remaining close together. "Who!?"

"The clockers, the-the nosy neighbors, and team T.I.E.S. They caught me off guard while I was in the forest."

"Who died!?" She shook her head.

"N-no one...it was just a strike of lighting."

"Why-why'd they attack you?"

"T-they wanted revenge against all of you." We all go silent, glancing between each other in somewhat guilt.

"Well, that doesn't matter right now." I state, gently lifting her into my arms. "What matters is that you're safe. We all are." She nods, placing her face in the crook of my neck. I nod at Jimmy and Grian before turning and making my way back into the woodland mansion.
