Hear me out, like instead of Josh (her stepbrother) the love interest could be like a nerdy kinda academia girl who is interning under her father. Cher's whole thing about not wanting to date a high school guy instead of just making it that she's picky it could've been that she's a lil fruity. The only guy she likes being gay, like PLEASE. But instead she falls in love with this lowk loser lesbian and i think that would be literally great.
