Chapter 20
Aiden POV
I was deep in sleep when I felt a presence in the room. I blinked groggily, trying to make sense of the dark figure standing by the door. It took a moment to register that it was my dad.
"Aiden, get up," he said, his voice firm and urgent. "I need you to come to the office with me. Now."
My heart pounded as I scrambled to sit up, the suddenness of the command catching me off guard. Aric stirred beside me, equally confused.
"Dad, what's going on?" I asked, still trying to shake off the remnants of sleep.
"No questions right now. Just get ready," he replied, leaving no room for argument. He turned to Aric. "And Aric, don't forget to meet us at the food hall later today. We'll be looking for mates within the pack."
Aric nodded, still half-asleep. "Got it, Dad."
I hurriedly got out of bed, grabbed some clothes, and rushed to the bathroom for a quick shower. The cold water jolted me fully awake, and I quickly washed off the previous night's events. Memories of Jenna and our passionate night together flashed through my mind, but I pushed them aside, focusing on the task at hand.
I dressed quickly, pulling on a pair of jeans and a comfortable shirt. With a deep breath, I headed to the living room where my dad was waiting, his expression serious and focused.
"Let's go," he said, leading the way out of the house.
We walked in silence to the car. The cool pre-dawn air was refreshing, and I took deep breaths to clear my mind and prepare for whatever was ahead. My dad's sudden request had thrown me off, but I knew better than to question him without good reason.
I climbed into the truck with my dad, still trying to shake off the remnants of sleep. As he turned the truck on and we started driving, I noticed we were heading towards the edge of the pack lands. A knot of nervousness tightened in my stomach.
"Dad, where are we going?" I asked respectfully, trying to keep my voice steady.
He glanced over at me with a small smile. "Relax, Aiden. We're just going to the breakfast shop nearby to get some breakfast sandwiches and coffee for the office. It's been a while since we did that."
The tension in my shoulders eased, replaced by a sense of surprise. "Oh, that sounds good. I didn't expect that."
He chuckled softly. "It's always nice to start the day with a good meal and to show the pack members how much you appreciate them."
We drove in comfortable silence for a few minutes, the early morning light beginning to filter through the trees. The familiar sights of our pack lands gave way to the outskirts of the territory, and soon we were pulling into the parking lot of a quaint little breakfast shop.
The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and sizzling bacon greeted us as we stepped inside. The place was cozy and inviting, with a handful of regulars chatting over their morning cups.
"Morning, Alpha," the owner, a cheerful middle-aged woman named Mary, greeted us warmly. "It's been a while. Do you want the usual?"
"Morning, Mary," my dad replied with a smile. "Yes."
"Coming right up," she said, bustling off to prepare our order.
We found a spot to sit while we waited, watching people come and go in the café. The place had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and I could see why my dad liked coming here.
Finally, Mary returned to the counter, piling boxes upon boxes filled with breakfast sandwiches. She also placed two huge boxes labeled "coffee" that had spouts on them so you could fill your cup up. My eyes widened at the sheer amount of food and coffee we were buying.
