Chapter 24
Aric POV
The moonlight filtered through the canopy, casting an eerie glow over the battlefield. The air was thick with tension, the scent of blood and sweat permeating every breath. We had launched a surprise attack on Alpha Marcus, hoping to catch them off guard. It was a gamble, but in war, sometimes risk was the only option.
The forest erupted into chaos as our packs clashed. Wolves shifted mid-leap, fur flying, fangs bared. The sound of growls, snarls, and the crunch of bones filled the air. I fought with a ferocity I didn't know I possessed, my mind focused on one thing: survival. Aiden was at my side, a whirlwind of power and rage, his presence a fierce reminder of our shared blood and rivalry.
I lunged at an enemy wolf, sinking my teeth into its shoulder and using my momentum to slam it into a tree. It yelped in pain but quickly retaliated, claws raking across my side. Ignoring the sting, I pivoted and delivered a swift, crushing bite to its neck. The wolf went limp, and I moved on, scanning the battlefield for my next target.
Aiden was a sight to behold, tearing through foes with a brutal efficiency. Despite our differences, in battle, we moved with an almost instinctual coordination, our bond unbreakable in the heat of combat. Together, we cut through the enemy ranks, our combined strength a formidable force.
In the heart of the fray, I spotted our father, Alaric, locked in a deadly struggle with Alpha Marcus. The two titans clashed with an intensity that seemed to shake the very ground beneath them. They were a blur of fur and fangs, each blow they exchanged echoing with the weight of their power.
As I fought my way toward them, I could see the toll the battle was taking on our father. He was formidable, but so was Marcus. The two were evenly matched, and the fight dragged on, each moment a testament to their endurance and will.
Finally, with a mighty roar, Alaric delivered a devastating blow to Marcus, driving him to the ground. But the victory was short-lived. In a final act of defiance, Marcus surged up, sinking his teeth into our father's neck. They went down together, a tangle of fur and blood, each claiming the other's life in their final moments.
"No!" The cry tore from my throat as I reached them, but it was too late. The light had already faded from Alaric's eyes.
Beside me, Aiden's face twisted in grief and rage. "Father..."
As the enemy pack retreated, the reality of our loss settled over us like a suffocating shroud. Our mother, Olivia, who had been the heart of our pack, collapsed from the heartbreak soon after, unable to bear the loss of her mate. The weight of leadership now fell upon us, but the title could belong to only one.
With our father's last breath, he had whispered the words that would change everything. "Aric... you... must lead... the pack..." His final command echoed in my mind, a heavy burden I couldn't refuse.
Aiden's eyes blazed with a mix of fury and disbelief. "What did he say?" he demanded, though he had heard the words clearly.
"Father named me Alpha," I replied, my voice steady despite the storm raging inside me.
Aiden's face contorted with a mix of betrayal and anger. "No! This isn't right! I trained just as hard as you did! I deserve the title just as much!"
I met his gaze with a calm resolve that only seemed to infuriate him further. "Father made his choice, Aiden. We have to honor it."
The tension between us crackled like a live wire. The other pack members watched, their loyalty divided between us. Aiden's eyes burned with an intensity that made it clear he was not going to accept this easily.
