Chapter 27

Aiden POV

Aric and I woke up before dawn, the sky still cloaked in darkness. I took a shower, letting the steam relax my muscles. I chose a comfortable outfit due to the cold weather outside: a light beige hoodie layered under an olive green jacket, black pants, and beige sneakers with green and red accents. I grabbed my packed bag and headed outside to Aric's car, the vehicle we had decided to take for our journey.

As I stepped out into the crisp morning air, I could see Aric already loading his bag into the trunk. The car's engine hummed softly, its headlights cutting through the early morning fog.

"Ready?" Aric asked, closing the trunk and turning to face me.

"Yeah, let's get going," I replied, feeling a mix of anticipation and determination.

We climbed into the car, the familiar scent of leather and the hum of the engine providing a comforting backdrop. As we drove away from the house, the first light of dawn began to break over the horizon, casting a golden glow on the road ahead.

I pulled my phone out of my jacket pocket and plugged it into the car's audio system. After scrolling through my playlist, I selected a song and hit play, a mischievous grin spreading across my face as I glanced at Aric, knowing he hated this particular song.

The familiar beats of the song filled the car, and Aric's expression immediately turned into a playful scowl. "Really? This song? You know I can't stand it," he groaned, shaking his head.

I chuckled, enjoying the moment. "Come on, it's not that bad. Besides, it's a long drive; we need something to keep us entertained."

Aric rolled his eyes but couldn't hide his smile. "Fine, but you owe me. Next song is my choice."

"Deal," I said, settling back into my seat as the car sped down the road. The sun was beginning to rise, casting a warm glow over the landscape and signaling the start of our adventure.

As we drove, the music played, and despite Aric's initial annoyance, the familiar rhythms soon had us both tapping our fingers and singing along. It was moments like these that reminded me how strong our bond was.

As we drove for two hours, the landscape gradually shifted from the familiar surroundings of our territory to more open roads and distant horizons. The sun had fully risen, casting a warm glow over everything. The rhythmic hum of the car's engine and the music from the stereo provided a steady backdrop for our thoughts.

"We're running low on gas," Aric said, glancing at the fuel gauge. "Let's stop at the next gas station."

A few miles later, we pulled into a small, quaint gas station. The neon sign flickered, and the station itself had a nostalgic charm, with an old-fashioned pump and a small convenience store attached.

As Aric began filling up the tank, I stretched my legs and headed inside to pick up some snacks and drinks. The bell above the door jingled as I entered, and the familiar scent of coffee and assorted snacks filled the air.

I grabbed a couple of energy drinks, some bottled water, and a variety of snacks—chips, granola bars, and a few candy bars for good measure. As I made my way to the counter, the cashier gave me a friendly nod.

"Long drive ahead?" he asked, scanning the items.

"Yeah, you could say that," I replied with a smile. "Just needed to stock up."

After paying, I carried the bags back to the car, where Aric was just finishing up with the pump.

"Got us some essentials," I said, handing him a drink and a bag of snacks.
