Chapter 23

Aiden POV

For the first time, Aiden and Aric were on warrior duty, patrolling the pack border, protecting our lands. The tension in the air was palpable; everyone knew that Alpha Marcus was after the experimental books, the dark legacy our pack had tried to bury.

Aric and I moved silently through the dense forest, our senses heightened, alert for any signs of intrusion. The moon cast an eerie glow on the path ahead, the only sound the crunch of leaves under our boots.

"Keep your eyes peeled," Aric whispered, his voice barely audible over the rustle of the wind.

"I know," I replied, scanning the area around us. "Dad's counting on us."

As we kept walking, patrolling the border, the night was quiet, save for the occasional rustle of leaves in the breeze. Suddenly, a branch snapped beyond the border, and both Aric and I stopped walking, our senses on high alert. We stared into the unknown, knowing not to be lured out of our positions.

Before we could react further, a bunch of teenagers jumped out from behind the trees and yelled, "Boo!" Their faces lit up with mischievous grins that quickly faded when they realized who they were trying to scare.

Aric and I stood there, our expressions hardening. The teenagers' eyes widened in fear as they recognized us—the Alpha's sons, known for our ruthlessness.

"What the hell do you think you're doing?" Aric growled, his voice low and dangerous.

One of the teenagers, a tall boy who looked like the leader of the group, stepped forward, his bravado quickly crumbling. "W-we didn't know it was you guys. We were just messing around."

I stepped closer, making sure to keep my voice controlled but firm. "This isn't a game. You know how serious things are right now. What if we had attacked first and asked questions later?"

The boy gulped, clearly regretting their little stunt. "We're sorry. We didn't mean any harm."

"Get back to the pack house," I ordered, my eyes narrowing. "And if I catch any of you out here again, there will be consequences. Do you understand?"

They all nodded vigorously, muttering apologies as they turned and hurried back towards the pack lands. Aric and I watched them go, the adrenaline still pumping through our veins.

"Idiots," Aric muttered once they were out of earshot. "They could've gotten themselves hurt—or worse."

I nodded, my jaw tight. "We need to report this to Dad. If kids are sneaking out, it could be a bigger issue than we think."

Aric agreed, and we continued our patrol, even more vigilant than before. The incident had shaken us, but it also reinforced the importance of our duty. Protecting the pack wasn't just about fending off external threats; it was also about maintaining order within our borders.

Before we knew it, our relief arrived, taking over our positions and allowing us to head back home. As the seriousness of our duty started to lift, the bond between us as brothers took over.

"Race you?" I asked Aric with a mischievous grin.

Aric returned my grin, his competitive spirit lighting up. "You're on!"

Without another word, we both took off, sprinting through the forest. The cool night air rushed past us, and the thrill of the race made me feel alive. Despite the tension and responsibility of our patrol, this moment reminded me of our childhood, when life was simpler and everything was a competition.

We dodged trees and leapt over fallen logs, each of us trying to outpace the other. The path home was familiar, and our instincts guided us effortlessly through the terrain. As we neared the cabin, I pushed myself harder, determined to win.
