The next morning, at the training grounds, chaos erupted as the Gronckle headbutted Tuffnut, sending him flying through the air. Y/n's eyes widened as she saw Tuffnut hurtling towards her. She quickly sidestepped, narrowly avoiding a collision, but Ruffnut wasn't so lucky—Tuffnut crashed right into her, knocking them both over in a tangle of limbs.
Meanwhile, the Gronckle spotted Hiccup and charged at him. Hiccup discreetly pulled out a fistful of 'dragon-nip' and pressed it to the Gronckle's nose. The dragon immediately stopped its struggle, going weak in the knees and whimpering blissfully. Hiccup dropped the handful of dragon nip to the ground, and the Gronckle followed it down, going down with it in a state of bliss.
From Gobber's point of view, as well as from a few villagers and the other recruits, it appeared as though Hiccup was controlling the Gronckle with nothing more than a limp arm.
The recruits walked together in the afternoon on a massive bridge connecting the gap on the island, surrounding Hiccup and bombarding him with questions.
"Hey Hiccup, I've never seen a Gronckle do that before," Fishlegs said, wide-eyed with curiosity.
"How'd you do that?" Tuffnut chimed in, his tone a mix of awe and confusion.
"It was really cool," Ruffnut added, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
Y/n, who knew the trick Hiccup used but still wanted to question him in front of everyone to avoid suspicion, joined in with playful enthusiasm. "Yeah, you just single-handedly controlled Meatl— I mean that Gronckle. That was awesome." She acted happy and excited, and Hiccup understood she was putting on a show.
Hiccup squirmed slightly, then quickly invented an excuse. "I left my axe back in the ring," he said, turning and hurrying back. "You guys go on ahead and I'll catch up with you."
Astrid watched him go, suspicion clear in her eyes.
A few seconds later, Y/n made an excuse and started to run off. Leo caught her arm, his eyes narrowing with suspicion. "I can understand why and where Hiccup might have gone, but what are you planning to do?"
Y/n, not wanting to lie but also not wanting to disclose her plans, made an excuse. "I have a lot to do... something. I promise not to do anything reckless." With that, she rushed towards her home, leaving Leo watching her retreating figure with a mix of concern and curiosity.
She reached her home, her mind racing with determination. She quickly searched for her bag where she kept the collected scales of Toothless. She pulled out the dragon nip that Hiccup had given her previously, a smile tugging at her lips. She then grabbed another bag and filled it with some medical supplies, fish, and the dragon nip. Careful not to arouse suspicion, she slipped out of the house and headed into the forest.
As she walked, Y/n talked to herself, "Where did that Sand Wraith go? It can't have left Berk; it was too tired to plan another flight when I saw it last time."
Her heart pounded in her chest, both from the exertion of the walk and the anticipation of finding the dragon again. She followed the path leading to the cove where she had seen it drink water. Her ears picked up on the sound of rhythmic breathing a bit far from the cove, the unmistakable sign of a large creature resting nearby. She scanned the area, her eyes darting between the trees and bushes, searching for the source of the sound.
Y/n crept closer, her steps careful and quiet. As she rounded a large boulder, she saw it: the Sand Wraith. It was lying on its side, its breathing heavy and labored. The dragon's scales, usually a sandy beige, were dull and covered in dirt. She could see the scratches and minor wounds on its body, a testament to a recent struggle.
