"Come on, you gotta get out. Staying home all the time isn't healthy." My mom's friend said, which only annoyed me. Honestly, it made me want to stay home more than I did before. But I knew that she wouldn't stop nagging me if I didn't go alone. "Fine. Where are we going?" I asked with a deep sigh. "I thought going to the circus would be nice. It's at the local fairgrounds, so we don't have far to go." My mom's friend said with a small smile. "Okay, let me go get changed." I replied as I got up off of the couch. I walked into my room and looked through my clothes. Since we were going to the circus I decided to wear a Pennywise t-shirt. But it was from the new IT movies, not the original. I picked out a pair of light blue jeans and red converse.
I grabbed my yellow plaid jacket; it had black and red in it, so it matched my outfit perfectly. Plus it was a thin jacket. I knew it was hot out because it was the middle of July, but some nights it gets a little chilly. "Are you ready to go?" My mom asked as I stuffed my jacket into my backpack. "Yeah." I said as I put the backpack on. I always take a backpack with me to places like that. Especially if there are vendors and I decide to buy something. I don't wanna have to carry it around with me the whole time. I walked out of my room and made sure I had everything I needed. I followed them outside into the hot and humid evening air.
If it wasn't summer it would have felt nice and cool outside at this time of day. Unfortunately it was still summer. Not that I have anything against it, I just hate it when it gets unbearably hot. We got into my mom's car and I got into the back seat. The sun was still up, but in an hour it would start setting. I only hoped that the temperature would fall as darkness fell. But I knew not to get my hopes up. The whole drive my mom and her friend talked. I looked out of the window and spoke when I was talked to. Eventually we reached the fairgrounds and we're directed to a parking spot. There were a good amount of cars in the parking lot. I was surprised this many people had came to see the circus. But I guess it's because it was new; we never had a circus troup come into town before.
I stepped out of the car and was hit by the humidity again. I instantly started to sweat a little. I grabbed my backpack and we walked up to the gate. My mom's friend paid for our tickets, which was nice of her. Then we got checked for weapons and whatnot. My backpack was searched as well, which I didn't mind. You can never be too careful nowadays. Once that was over we walked through to the big top tent. An odd feeling of excitement filled me when I spotted the massive red and white striped tent. The smells fille me with joy as well. Funnel cakes, hot dogs/corn dogs, cotton candy, and popcorn. I spotted a marry-go-round ride as well as a farris wheel a little ways away. Contest stands to win prizes, face painting, characture drawings, bloom animals, etc.
It was almost everything I imagined a circus would be. After a few minutes of walking we finally entered the big top. Bleacher styled seats were circled around the perimeter of the tent. We got to sit in the third row of seats, which was nice. We sat for what felt like forever. Floods of people filled the place to the brim. It made me a little uncomfortable with how many people were there, but I tried to think about it too much. Eventually the show began. Tightrope walkers, jugglers, two strong men, and a few clowns. There wasn't any animals in sight because using animals in circuses has been outlawed.
One of the clowns caught my attention. He was by far the funniest out of all of them. He had on the usual clown makeup, but he looked more rock and roll than the rest. When the show ended some people were upset about it. I was somewhat glad because my butt was starting to go numb. These seats weren't made to be sat on for long periods of time. It took a while to actually get out of the tent. The sun was still up, but it had started to set. "Y/n, there's someone I want you to meet." My mom's friend said. My mom and I rolled out eyes. She had been trying to set me up with someone for forever. It made me feel uncomfortable. We followed her over to a guy that was standing at a concession stand. "This is Hank." My mom's friend said, introducing us.
