I walk to the black lake, sweat slicking my hands. For once I'm there before Draco. I don't even sit down, I just stand watching the castle.
'Okay, so just talk about what Hermione said. No problem,' I think. 'Except maybe Harry... he might have something to say about this... meeting.'
A couple of minutes later, Draco comes out of the castle towards me. 'Sorry to keep you waiting. I was held up.'
'It's fine,' I smile.
'So, uh, what did you need?'
'I don't know. Just wanted to.. hang out?' I look at him. 'Just one thing...'
'What's that?' he says, grinning.
'Harry. If he knows I'm still meeting with you, he'll flip.'
'True... but who cares? I'm sure he'll get over it.' He takes my hand. 'Kitchens?'
'Only if we're fast. I have to meet Harry and Ron, to go to Hagrid's. He invited us over.'
He raises his eyebrows at first but then nods and starts tugging me towards the castle. We run through the corridors, hoping Mrs Norris, Mr Filch or Peeves won't bother us. Luck seems to be on our side today. There's not a sign of them.
We arrive at the kitchens and I tickle the pear. We ask the cute little house elves for some pumpkin pasties and pumpkin juice. We eat them quickly, thank the elves and run back to the hall. Soon the doors open and students spill out. 'Bye!' I call to Draco.
'Bye, Lydia,' he smiles, and then goes over to his friends. I look around for Harry.
Eventually I spot him. I push my way through the crowd over to him. He's with Ron, and Hermione isn't far off.
'Hey, Lydia,' they greet me.
'Hey. If you don't mind, could you meet me just outside the door? I need to talk to Hermione for a minute.'
'Okay, see you soon.'
I push through some more people and grab Hermione's arm. 'Hermieee!'
'Hermie?'
'Yeah. Anyway, guess what happened?' Before she could guess, I tell her. 'So, uh, NOTHING. Nothing happened, Hermione! Why? Aside from nothing,' I pause. 'He held my hand! Then, we went to the kitchens and got some food and hung out for a bit.' I smile, more to myself than her.
She grins. 'Cool,' she nods. 'We'll talk more later, I need to do some homework.'
'Help me with potions, when I get back?' I ask, to her raising her eyebrows. 'Please, o fabulous, smart, gracious Hermie?' I wink. She agrees, seeming somewhat annoyed. I managed to get a smile, though.
She waves, walking with the other left over students. I wave back and turn around. I walk out the door and wave to my brother and Ron.
'Hey, Harry. How ya doin', Ronnie?' I greet them. They say their hellos back. 'To Hagrid's!' I proclaim. Ron gives me a "what-are-you-on?" look.
We walk to Hagrid's and knock on the door. We hear Hagrid say 'Back, Fang! Back!' He opens the door. 'Hello! Hang on a minute,' he closes the door. 'Fang, get back!' He opens it again. 'Okay, you can come in now.'
We step into the one room house and a big dog comes bounding over. It must be Fang. Harry pats it. 'Hi, Hagrid. This is Ron.'
'Another Weasley, aye? Spent most of me life chasin' your twin brothers away from the Forbidden Forest, I 'ave,' Hagrid smiles.
I look around the room. Meat was hanging from the ceilings, in the corner there was a bed big enough for 20 of me, covered in a messily made patchwork quilt, and over the stove there was a cooper kettle coming to the boil. The three of us sit on a huge couch while Hagrid puts some rock cakes onto a plate. He brings them over, along with some tea.
Hagrid asks Ron about Charlie. Ron told him about Charlie's work with dragons. We eat the rock cakes we're offered, and- although they almost break our teeth- we pretend to like them. Harry gets into a conversation about classes and starts telling Hagrid about how Snape dislikes him. 'Why would he?' asks Hagrid, not quite meeting my brother's eye.
Hagrid calls Filch an 'old git' and complains about Mrs Norris. Harry reaches for a paper under the table. I look over at what he's reading. Gringrotts Break-in Latest reads the headline.
'Hagrid! This was on our birthday!' He exclaims. He meant his and mine, obviously. 'They could've been there at the same time as us!'
There is no doubt in my mind, that this time Hagrid didn't look at Harry's eyes. He simply grunted and offered us more rock cakes. I looked over the article and see the vault had been emptied earlier that day.
The day of our birthday, Hagrid took us to Diagon Alley, where we went to the Gringotts bank. We had gone to the vault seven hundred and thirteen and... emptied it.
'Hagrid...' I start.
'No. I know nothing,' he says. He's such a bad liar. 'Anyway, I seen you and that Malfoy kid down by the black lake.' Ah, so he changes the subject.
'What?!' Harry stands up.
'Uh, well, I asked him to meet me there?'
'Why?'
'Because I wanted to hang out with him. If that's okay,' I reply cooly.
'Why would you want to? What were you thinking?!'
'I was thinking I wanted to meet a friend by a lake... to hang out with him,' I frown.
'We'd better be off,' Ron says, apologetically, to Hagrid.
'Okay, bye Ron. Bye 'arry, bye Lydia. See you all later,' he opens the door for us.
We say goodbye and then start back to the castle . We're barely ten steps away before Harry stops. He starts lecturing me about how not all people can't be trusted. Especially people like Malfoy.
'What the hell do you know about him? You have hardly spoken to him,' I practically yell. He starts to protest but I cut him off. 'You hate him for practically no reason. You don't know what's best for me, so stay out of it!'
'I- I think I'll leave you guys to it...' mutters Ron.
'No, it's okay. I'm going anyway,' I snap, before half running, half stomping up to the castle. I go up to the common room. Hermione's probably in the library. Oh, wait there she is, going up to the dorm. I follow her up and collapse on my bed.
'Are you okay?' asks Hermione. 'Lydia? Are you alright?'
'No.'
