Dumbledore had said Harry could not to go looking for the Mirror of Erised again, so for the rest of the Christmas holidays the invisibility cloak stayed at the bottom of his trunk, meaning I couldn't go looking either.
A few days after the conversation with Dumbledore, Harry tells Ron and I about nightmares he is having. 'I keep dreamed about my- our- parents disappearing in a flash of green light, while a voice laughs in a very high pitch...'
'Dumbledore was right, that mirror can drive you mad," says Ron.
The next day, Hermione returns! As soon as I see her I run up to her. 'Hermione! I missed you so so so much. It's so awful just being with the stupid boys! I needed you to help me shut them up a few times- but don't worry I sorted them, eventually!' I smile, making her laugh. I was so happy to have my best friend back. Suddenly I remember something I need to show her. 'Want to see what Draco got me for Christmas?' I ask, my smile growing wider.
'Okay! I've missed you, too! My parents were boring compared to you guys- a lot quieter, although my mother screamed quite loudly on the rollercoaster,' Hermione laughs at the memory. 'I convinced them to take me to a fair,' she explains.
I drag her up to the common room, where she stops and says a quick 'hi,' and a 'be right back,' to the boys. We rush to the dorm room. Hermione sits on my bed, watching me pull the bracelet out from my trunk. I open the box. 'Woah,' Hermione gasps.
'They move!' she says, looking at the charms. 'A castle... presumably Hogwarts- where you first met...' she touches the charm gently.
'That's what I was thinking!' I say. 'And the lion is meant to be me, right? The lion is Gryffindor's animal-mascot-thing, and I'm the Gryffindor, yeah?'
Hermione nods slowly. 'What about the dragon?' she asks, looking curiously at the charm.
'It's him. Draco means dragon in Latin- we were forced to learn Latin at our old school. The teacher loved "mythical beings", as she called them.'
Hermione grins. 'That's so cute! Have you seen him since he got back?' Hermione nudges me.
'No, but I'm goi-'
'What's that?' Lavender cuts me off.
'A bracelet. Got it for Christmas,' I reply.
'From who?'
'Someone...' I say, awkwardly.
'As long as it wasn't my Won-Won!' she says, before hurrying off. The way she calls him Won-Won annoys me so much- and Hermione, too, judging by the look on her face. I sigh, put the bracelet away and being to head downstairs, with Hermione following.
Hermione has a different view from Ron and I on the mirror. She is horrified at the idea of us being out of bed, roaming the school three nights in a row- well, Harry had gone three nights, anyway. 'If Filch had caught you!' she sighs.
'But he didn't!' I say, cheerfully. She glares at me and I retreat. She is also disappointed that we haven't found a thing about who Nicolas Flamel is.
Once term started, we go back to flicking through books during breaks. Harry had less time than us- Quidditch had begun again. On the third day back, during breakfast, I got an owl.
It had a note:
"Black lake, lunch break?
-D"
I glance at the Slytherin table, where I find Draco raising his eyebrows in a "so?" way. I nod.
