'Wait, we'd better put the cloak on here!' I say. 'Just to make sure there's no feet showing.'

Ron begins to agree when he's cut off by a small voice in a dark corner. 'What are you doing?' it says. I recognise the voice instantly. It's Neville.

'Nothing, Nev,' I say. Neville steps out of his corner, clutching his toad, Trevor, who looks like he wants to make yet another escape attempt.

'Yeah. . . nothing,' Harry says, awkwardly shoving the cloak behind his back.

Neville speaks up again shakily, 'You're going out again.'

'No, no, no!' Hermione says, her voice sounding high pitched with nerves. 'We're not, really. Why don't you hop on up to bed?'

Harry glances at the grandfather clock, and I follow his lead. It's getting late. We can't afford to waste time- Snape might even be past Fluffy by now!

'You can't go out again, Gryffindor will get in even more trouble,' Neville says in attempt to be bold. He shakes his fist while saying it, making it seem slightly comedic.

'Well we're not going out, okay.' I'm beginning to get annoyed. 'So, Neville, go to bed.'

Neville begins to retort, but Harry puts his hand up. 'Okay, we might be. But you don't understand. Nev, this is important

Neville was obviously prepared to say- and do- something completely mad in his desperate attempt to stop us. He slowly, shakily raises his fist. 'I will - I'll fight you!' he says.

Ron scoffs rudely, before exploding into speech. 'Neville! Get away from the hole - and don't. . . don't be an idiot! Go on!'

'Don't call me an idiot! And don't tell me what to do,' Neville yells back. 'You need to see it from my point of view. I will not let Gryffindor go down because of you four! It's not fair,' he finishes, looking madder than I've ever seen him.

'Neville. . . calm down-' I begin, getting cut off.

'No! I won't. I don't think you should be breaking the rules. And it was you, Ron, who told me to stand up to people!' Neville points at Ron, who looks slightly scared.

'Well, yeah. . .' Ron says, at a loss. 'But not to us! To - to Malfoy! Now, let. Us. Past! You have no idea what we are going to be doing.'

Ron seems to have regained his confidence and steps towards Neville. Neville drops poor Trevor, who promptly runs and hides somewhere in the dark common room. 'Go on then. Hit me. I dare you!' Neville almost shouts.

'Neville, that's enough!' I say. 'Honestly, you need to calm down. Ron wouldn't dare hit you,' I continue, shooting a look at Ron when I hear him mutter something. I then shift my eyes to Hermione. 'Hermione, please do something!' I whisper.

She steps forward, breathing in deeply. 'I'm so, so sorry, Nev,' she apologises in advance before pointing her wand and saying 'Petrificus Totalus!'

Neville's arms snap to his sides, his legs springing together. If he wasn't a friend, I might have laughed for just a second. His whole body was now rigid. He swayed slightly, before falling slowly forward. He falls flat on his face. Ron smiles slightly, so I hit him softly in the stomach. 'Shut up, Ronald.'
