CHAPTER 65

I woke up.

By a shout.

Thomas.

He was screaming...at a bird.

"For god's sake Thomas". I groaned as I punched his arm. "Did you have to wake us up with your screams?" I tried to push myself off the ground but my back hurt.

Sleeping in rocks and dirt isn't one of the best experiences. But I've slept in the pits twice. Wherever we sleep will be fine as long as we're alive and safe together.

"We should move on". He nodded picking up his backpack.

"Okay". I nodded too. "Let's wake up the others".

Now we are not running. We are walking.

But I would never imagine a city like this.

A city should have had roads and beautiful, clean, shiny buildings.

But this place is also scorched.

The buildings are huge but ruined. There was glass everywhere and broken cars.

That is why I prefer the nature.

"Hang on, stop". Thomas suddenly called. His eyes inspected our surroundings as if he saw or heard something-

But now I do too.

I turned around and glared at him. "Do you hear that?"

I tried to concentrate everything on the strange and faint sound. The sound was getting louder and louder and louder-

"Everybody, hide, hide!" Thomas shouted.

Eventually, all of us followed Thomas under a big piece of stone. A huge rock we would be able to hide ourselves from this strange sound.

I glanced at the sky and saw a helicopter flying over the area.

Of course.

"They're never gonna stop looking for us, are they?" Nolan quietly asked.

"No". I exhaled and glanced at Nolan. "They won't".

Some time has passed and we're still walking around the Scorch. There is more air than there was some minutes ago.

Now we were on top of a hill of sand.

"Those mountains". Thomas pointed at the horizon. "That's gonna be it". He nodded.

We are watching the sight in front of us. From a very long distance, I saw more mountains. It would take us more than a day to get there.

How could we last?

"That's a long way off". Newt commented, with a small sigh. He was sort of against all this. Yes, we need to be protected but we also need to move forward.

"Then we better get moving".

When we were ready to head off again, I heard something fall on the ground. Or someone.

Winston let himself fall onto the floor and his face landed right in the sand.

He seemed to lose consciousness. Maybe it was low blood pressure? Bradycardia? Or even low iron?
