The feeling of nervous butterflies in my stomach feels odd. Tony should be here at any second and you would think that as his wife I would just be happy, not nervous at all, but instead I am nervous. It almost feels like Tony and I aren't married and he's some guy I just started dating who's coming over to my apartment for the first time, and not like he's my actual husband who I had an entire house and life with.
The sudden sound of a hand knocking against my front door makes me jump, making my heart start to beat even faster somehow. I take a deep, calming breathe, tell myself to relax and open up the door to find my husband on the other side of it, smiling at me.
"Hi." I say, smiling shyly.
"Hi, you." he says, returning the smile. He looks at the outside wall of my place before turning his attention back to me. "So here it is."
"Yep, here it is. I'm glad you could come."
"Glad you invited me."
I smile at him stupidly, like a girl who's talking to her crush for the first time. Judging by the matching smile on his own face I'd say that Tony doesn't seem to mind the lovestruck behaviour I'm displaying.
"So," Tony says slowly, pulling me from my thoughts. "Can I come in?"
"Oh my God, yeah." I say while blushing. "Come in, come in."
I hear Tony laugh quietly as he walks into my place, no doubt loving how spacey I still am. I curse myself out for looking so dumb as I close the door behind us.
"It's bigger than your old place." Tony remarks as he takes the space in.
I furrow my brows at him. "Our place?"
"No, your place before we were together. The one you lived at when I met you."
"Oh. Yeah, I guess it is bigger." I say as I look around the room. To be honest I never cared about how big of a space I lived in just as long as I had enough area to aptly move around and enough space to keep all my stuff in. Here in Texas I don't have much stuff anyway so it's not like I needed a giant place, but Tony's right, this place is a bit bigger than my last place.
"You know, last time you never gave me a proper tour of your place." Tony teases.
"I did so!"
He shakes his head at me. "Nope. You showed me your bedroom, well, your bed, and made me figure the rest out."
"Not true!" I protest. "I showed you the kitchen too."
"Oh please, I had to find my way there."
"I showed you where the bathroom was."
"No, you didn't. I had to track you down in the bathroom the next morning."
"Fine, whatever." I say with an eyeroll. "Let me show you around here so you don't complain for the rest of time."
Tony accepts my offer happily - and a little too smugly, but regardless I give him a tour of the place. It's nothing fancy, really. There's all the basics, a small bathroom with an outdated shower, one where I've hung up a plant near the window so I can pretend that I'm in some oasis when I shower. There's the kitchen that I've hardly cooked in, a small living room that I spend most of my time in and most nights even sleep in. I even go as far as to show him the closets along the way.
"And this is my room." I say as we walk into the small bedroom that holds only a bed, a dresser and nightstand as furniture.
Tony looks around the room, his eyes studying everything I've set up. I see his eyes fly right to the vase of fake flowers that I had created to match my actual bouquet of flowers that I held on our wedding day. The white, black, and blue mixed fake flowers have sat beside my bed since the day I moved here, serving as a reminder of my life before Texas. Tony reaches out gently and strokes the fake flower petals with his thumb and index finger.
