Sorry, this one is long...I guess not longer than some of my other chapters...but still. It didn't feel right to split it though. Enjoy.
-shadowWith Wednesday:
Thing was waiting for Wednesday. He had seen her with Dr.Grimm and decided that the best course of action would be to head to her room and wait there. He was currently perched on her dark wooden bed frame. He had left a bag on her desk he brought back with him from the academy. Copies of her file. Skeleton Keys, blue prints, photos, and an address scrawled hastily on a torn scrap of paper. All things he stole from offices or project managers. Things he figured Wednesday should have in case she decided to ignore her verbal expulsion (there was no mention of expulsion in her actual file.) and fight her way back into Nevermore except the address. She would want that now. Thing felt pride in what he was able to accomplish in just one week.
Along with the bag came his report. The news he had to deliver was not great, but it could be worse. The students had all left Nevermore. Including Enid. They were not expected to return until after the new year. So, in about another month. The campus was a ghost town. It was quiet and empty except for the repairs being made. Wednesday would have loved it.
The items in the absence of the headmistress, the school board had voted to add some new security features along with the repairs. Nevermore would look less the dark gothic house of education it once was and more the prison Wednesday had accused it of being. Thing cringed at the thought. Without Weems things had really gone to hell. The changes included higher walls, more cameras, patrols, and doors with key pads, ID cards, and codes to enter and exit the dorm halls, fencing areas, gym, and the main school and administration buildings. There was also now a permanent caretaker at Raven Island as well. Thing shuttered. It just didn't seem right.
[But that's all for another story I have in the works.]Thing was suddenly snapped out of his thoughts. He could hear Wednesday's footfalls as she approached her door. The door creaked open and Wednesday entered quickly pressing her back to it as it shut. Her eyes were closed. She needed several deep breaths before she was able to proceed into the room. She sat on her bed facing Thing. "So?" She asked sternly. Thing would gulp if he could. He cracked his knuckles instead. "Thing. Stop stalling." Wednesday demanded. "I'm not." Thing signed. "Obviously the students are gone, or Enid would be with you. Unless she rejected me." Wednesday stated. "It's not you. I promise. They're gone." Thing signed. "How long?" She asked. "They've been gone about two weeks. They'll be gone another month or so." Thing replied.
Wednesday took a deep breath. "I don't know that I can wait that long." She sighed. "I brought you something!" Thing signed excitedly. He snapped pointing to the desk emphatically. He jumped off the bed frame landed on the desk and quickly rummaged through the items he had brought back. He held up the scrap of paper. Wednesday snatched it. She read it out loud. "Enid Sinclair. Home address and number." Then turned it over to find said address and number. Her eyebrows shot up nearly to her hairline. A ghost of a smile graced her lips. "Thank you thing." She said patting thing on the wrist.
Wednesday paced the space between her bed and the door. She quickly weighed her options. She could let Enid go completely destroying herself in the process. She could let it go and wait until the students returned to talk to Enid. She could call Enid and hope her hallow gesture smoothed things over for the time being. She could invite her to the manor for the upcoming holidays. Or she could travel to San Francisco with her proverbial tail between her legs, confess everything in the grandest way possible and beg Enid to forgive her for not coming back to their dorm right away when she said she would.
The choice was obvious and something more akin to her father than to herself. She couldn't wait. Wednesday had to see Enid, and she had to see her now. A ripple of excitement passed through her body. It felt like the right thing to do. Fly off to sunny California at the drop of a hat with no word to try and woo the most beautiful girl in the world. Maybe part of the curse was that those afflicted acted more on impulse, or maybe she was more like Gomez than she thought. Suddenly it occurred to Wednesday that maybe being a little more like her father from time to time wouldn't be such a bad thing. With a renewed sense of determination, Wednesday packed a few things and slowly descended the stairs.
