??: Good Afternoon everybody my name is Brian Kelton and I'm the superintendent in the Chicago Police Department. I want to start off my expressing my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Donte and Camilla Evans. On March 5th of 2016 we lost 2 extraordinary police officers. Detective Evans and Sanchez served with the Chicago police department for 15 years. They will always hold a special place in our heart. To their parents, son Jaylen, family and friends the Chicago police depart extends our deepest condolences you will always be a part of my family. Protecting our community is a noble profession. It's easy to forget why we choose this path but we believe it's more than a job. It's a calling. It takes a special kind of person with a special kind of drive to do this job.
There were a few more speeches and then the service came to an end. The intelligence unit and officers at the 21st district then carried each coffin out to the hearse. We had a police escort. We made our way to the cemetery where there were loads of people here to show their respects. The coffin was put on a stand and we stood around it. Hank got out his radio
Hank: This is Seargent Hank Voight. Detective Evans and Sanchez demonstrated commitment, professionalism and dedication every moment of every day and proudly wore the badge as a warrior for their community.
They then moved the coffins to where they will be buried. Bagpipes were played as we made our way to the location. They placed the coffin on the ground and got started with th 21 gun salute. As the ceremony was coming to an end the intelligence until took the flag from the coffin and folded it before handing it to me. They were then lowered into the ground.
Lena: you want to say anything?
I just shook my head. I gave her the flag and walked off.
Kelly: JaylenKelly pov
Jaylen ran off and Lena was about to go after him.
Kelly: I'll go
Lena: okay
I went after him. He was sat on a bench with his head in his hands. I sat beside him. I pulled him into my arms and he just started sobbing.
Kelly: you're okay
I just held him letting him cry. This has been building up for a while. After a few minutes he pulled away
Jaylen: I'm sorry
Kelly: what are you sorry for Jaylen?
Jaylen: you have my tears on your shirt
Kelly: I don't care about that. I need you to talk to me. What's gonna on in that head of yours?
Jaylen: I miss them. I really fucking miss them. I'm angry and upset and I don't want to feel this way anymore.
Kelly: I know. It will take time. You ready to go to the wake?
Jaylen: mhm the sooner this day is done the betterJaylen PoV
Everyone was waiting by the car so we all got in and drove to Mollys. Everyone was drinking and having fun so I left unnoticed and met up with an old friend.
Tyler: wassup Jaylen it's been a while
Jaylen: I know I got put in care and the family lives in San Diego
Tyler: shit man. Why you look so smart?
Jaylen: funeral
Tyler: sorry man
Jaylen: is what it is
He was smoking weed
Jaylen: roll me one
He rolled one and gave it to me. I started smoking and my phone was ringing
Jaylen: hello
Jay: where are you?
Jaylen: I just met up with a friend
Jay: which friend?
Jaylen: Tyler from school
Jay: your grandparents are here
Jaylen: I don't want to see them
Jay: Jaylen they're asking for you
Jaylen: like they care
Jay: just come and say hi
Jaylen: whatever. Can Tyler come?
Jay: if he wants to
I ended the call.We walked to Mollys and Kelly was talking to grandma
Kelly: here he is
Grandma: oh Jaylen I'm so sorry
Jaylen: what do you want?
Grandma: what?
Kelly: be nice
Jaylen: you barely kept in touch when they were alive but cause they're dead you just show up. I haven't seen you in like 8 years.
Grandpa: it's complicated
Jaylen: it's not complicated. You hated that mama was with dad.
Grandpa: no we didn't
Jaylen: yes you did. They told me what happened. I used to ask mama why I didn't know her parents and she would say because they didn't like your dad. I remember there was a Christmas where mama wanted you guys to stay. I heard the argument on the phone. You said that mama shouldn't date black people because they should stick to their own kind. They were your words. Or how about you telling dad that the only job he should have is serving white people or picking cotton. You thought it was funny but that hurt dad.
Grandpa: Jaylen just listen
Jaylen: No I don't care what you have to say. It's just like that saying no one cares until you're dying or dead.
Grandma was crying
Jaylen: what the fuck are you crying for?!You don't get to cry! When they were alive you didn't give a fuck! You cut mama out of your lives because she fell in love with a black man and you couldn't see past the colour
Grandpa: and you're a good for nothing thug. Look at you. You stink of weed and you cause trouble. That's all you black boys do
Kelly: that's enough
Every time they spoke I was getting angrier and angrier. Grandpa put a hand on my shoulder. I pushed him away
Jaylen: don't fucking touch me
Grandpa: I can see your dad didn't teach you any manners. No wonder why he got himself killed
My fists were clenched and I was about to swing for him when Kelly dragged me away. We went outside and I punched the wall on my way out.
Jaylen: you should've let me punch his fucking face in. The fucking racist prick.
Tyler came out
Tyler: you good?
Jaylen: fucking fantastic
Tyler: you wanna go to the shop?
Jaylen: come on then
Kelly gave me 10 bucks and we walked off.
Jaylen: you got anymore weed on you?
Tyler: yeah I've rolled already
He passed me one and we smoked it on the way to the shop. We got some snacks and went to the Alibi. We walked in and Kev and V were talking.
Jaylen: hey V
V: how you doing J we haven't seen you in a while
Jaylen: I moved to San Diego
V: I thought you liked it here in Chicago
Jaylen: I do but I got put in foster care and the family lives in San Diego
V: how is it?
Jaylen: it's okay. It's not Chicago but it's okay. How are the little ones?
V: they're good. Driving us mad but they're good. How comes your back?
Jaylen: mom and dads funeral
V: when you leaving?
Jaylen: not sure yet. We have an open ticket so we can go back whenever
V: We?
Jaylen: my foster mom came
V: couldn't you get on the flight alone?
Jaylen: I'm not allowed because of my epilepsy
V: fair enough
Kev: you stink of weed
Jaylen: I know
Kev: bet Jay doesn't know
Jaylen: not yet
Tyler: we should head back
Jaylen: I'll come and see you guys before I leave spend time with the girls
V: anytime J
We left and went back to Mollys
Kelly: what took you so long?
Jaylen: we went to the alibi
He was looking at me weirdly
Kelly: seriously Jaylen
Jaylen: if I didn't I would have smashed his head in
He shook his head at me and walked off
Jaylen: fuck off then
Tyler: I gotta go home I have to take my brother to soccer. I'll see you later. Come round before you leave. Mom and dad keep asking about you.
Jaylen: yeah sure
He left and I went and sat next to Lena.
Lena: you okay?
Jaylen: I wanna go home
Lena: you sure?
Jaylen: mhm
Lena: go get the keys from Kelly or Jay and then we'll get going
I went up to Jay
Jay: you okay?
Jaylen: can I have the keys? I wanna go home
Jay: sure. Are you feeling okay?
Jaylen: fine I just wanna go home
He gave me the keys and me and Lena went home. I just went straight up to bed.
