"has anyone ever told you no?"
______

"What are you thankful for Evie?"

Mrs. Green questions the zoned out girl. It's the day before Thanksgiving break and half of her students has decided to skip class. Sadly, the little Gray menace wasn't one of them.

It must be due to her poor attendance.

"Money."

Evie looks Mrs. Green dead in the eyes.

She's so vain.

Poor thing, Mrs. Green thinks to herself.

Vanity surrounds the Gray family like a plague. The girl could've said something meaningful like being thankful for her friends.

Though the teacher shouldn't be so surprised about the answer. What more would a selfish brat like Evie Gray care more about than money?

"Money, huh?" a girl Evie's long forgotten the name of perks up beside her, her voice equally as ugly as her freckled face. "Not your family?"

"What?" Evie's tone is dripping with condescending sarcasm. She looks over the girl with a judging glint in those green eyes. Of course the person talking shit about her is from the poor side of town.

"You heard me."

Evie blinks. This girl really doesn't seem to know when to back down.

It's fun to tease the poor kids who loathe her for the life she was born into. Evie smirks, "Like you'd know what it means to have money."

That shuts the room up momentarily. Then the girl snaps. Evie smiles at the way the ugly little freckle faced freak slams her hands on the wooden desk.

"Not all of us were born with a silver spoon in our mouths! So what if I don't have money? I bet my mother loves me way more than your parents love you!"

Oh she's seething.

Freckle face is as red as a tomato. Evie lives for moments like these. Must be why people think she's some mean, shallow, selfish bitch.

Not that their assumptions about her are far from the truth.

Evie lets out a laugh at the girl's tantrum. This girl really thinks digging at Evie's lack of parental figures hurts Evie's feelings? How old are they?
