We both walked down towards the altar. The theme color was black and white. The big hall was decorated with white roses and black balloons with golden lace hanging between them, making a beautiful pair. The tables were covered with black cloth with golden embroidery. Small white fairy lights made it look like heaven. We walked, his hand in mine and mine in his. I gulped a small amount of saliva when the music started. Kian's hold tightened on my hand.
We both took small steps together, with many thoughts on our minds, his clashing with mine and mine with his. But still, we were together. Not by love, but by something else. The books taught me the meaning of marriage, where a person becomes the support of the other not just by standing by their side, but by doing everything to make the other half happy. My world was always around him, and his was around mine too. My past was bad, but maybe his was happy.
This man was bad, cruel, a monster, but from now on, he is my husband to whom I will give my everything. Maybe he doesn't deserve it, but nobody else deserves it either. Everyone is bad in their own way.
Kian's gaze never left me, boring holes into my thin veil which he was dying to remove. I bit my lip at my own thought. Kian took a step first and stood before the priest. Then he gave me his hand. I placed mine in his and took a deep breath before standing just in front of him.
"Can you both hold your hands?" the priest said. I was looking down when Kian's rough hands softly picked up both of mine and held them in front of our waists.
"Do you know about marriage, my children?" the priest asked softly, and after hearing that, I let out a small answer unknowingly.
"Staying together," I said. Kian's fingers rubbed my hand softly after hearing that answer, and I lowered my head more, but then the priest spoke again.
"Yes, my child, you are right, but this means more than staying together. You have to be his other half. There will be some sacrifices, some fights, some misunderstandings, but you have to stick together and solve them one by one."
"Marriage comes with a huge responsibility in which you both have to fulfill your roles. Every decision you make will affect your other half. There will be tough times where no one will help you, but you have to help your other half. Love is a great emotion that will bind you and break you at the same time, but you have to choose if you want to be bound with your other half or break this beautiful connection. Some marriages don't start with love but end with love, so wait until your heart says not anymore."
He told me one more different meaning of marriage which I never heard, but from now on, I will remember this too. My eyes looked up at Kian, who was closing his eyes and mumbling something which no one could hear, but I did...
"I promise to never let you go away from me, Birdy..."
And I felt my heart stop for a few seconds.
"No one can be perfect, but you both together can make this perfect," the priest said, and Kian opened his eyes, his gaze again darting into my veil.
"Please repeat the vows. First, you, son," the priest said.
"I, Kian Blackwell, take you, Crystal Huster, to be my wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part, according to God's holy law, and this is my solemn vow," Kian said.
"Now your turn, daughter," the priest said, his gaze turning to me. Kian's grip tightened on my hand again, and I took a big gulp before saying...
"I, Crystal Huster, take you, Kian Blackwell, to be my husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part, according to God's holy law, and this is my solemn vow."
The priest said, "You may kiss now." When he said those words, a sole tear left my eye. Kian didn't waste any time. With a jerk, he pulled me into his hold tightly, throwing the veil off my face, and took my lips between his. This time, I moved mine too, and after feeling it, he gave a quick, hard, long suck on my lip and then let go.
I was about to say something when he picked me up on his shoulder like a sack of sand and announced...
