Thor and Frigga usher me into the secret safety room, having been alerted that a carriage is approaching the palace. But as soon as I step inside the concealed chamber, I am overcome by a suffocating sense of confinement.

The small, dark space instantly triggers memories of my time trapped in the dungeon, filling me with a paralysing fear.

"I can't stay here," I breathe, my body already beginning to tremble.

"But this is the safest place in the palace," Thor replies, his expression one of puzzlement.

Unwilling to reveal my inner turmoil—the newfound fear of locked places, I quickly fabricate an excuse. "This place is too small. It won't accommodate the machines keeping Leon alive."

"But the machines can be unplugged, they're simply monitoring his vital signs—" Frigga begins.

"No!" I interject sharply, my nerves fraying. "I would prefer a different hiding place."

I interlock my fingers, trying to steady my shaking hands, but Frigga detects the cracks in my façade and her expression softens with apparent understanding.

"It's okay, Annalise," she says reassuringly. "I will have you placed in a room far from the royal suites. One brighter and more spacious."

She gives me a knowing look, a quiet comfort. And with a snap of her fingers, the queen summons a guard, instructing him to escort the healers in moving Leon to the guest suite in the west wing, with guards posted at the door.

"Is this arrangement better?" she asks, as the soldier hurries to carry out her orders.

I nod gratefully, feeling her gentle hand guiding me towards the new, more accommodating quarters.

As I wait within the secure west wing of the palace, an area kept pristine for royal guests, my nerves begin to unravel. Frigga and Thor have chosen to wait with me in the large, brightly lit chambers, an attempt to ease my anxiety as the carriage approaches the palace. However, Thor's incessant pacing does little to calm my growing fears.

"Oh, will you stop your pacing, Thor!" Frigga finally snaps, clearly growing tired of the rhythmic thumping of his boots against the floor.

"What's taking that carriage so long?" Thor mutters, ignoring his mother's request as he continues to stride back and forth.

Frigga watches him, her eyes filled with frustration as she observes the way he's wearing down the immaculate rug beneath his feet.

Suddenly, the door swings open, and a breathless soldier bursts in. "He's arrived!"

The three of us exchange a tense glance, all sharing the same grave anxiety. Frigga rises from her chair, taking a steadying breath. "Well, I suppose I shall be the first to greet him," she says, offering a faint, reassuring smile. "Thor, you go over the plan with Annalise before joining me in the royal suite."
