Adhi's pov:
My heart ached as I watched Sam, her eyes brimming with turmoil and hesitation. I could see how much she wanted to trust me, to let herself believe in what we had, but the weight of her past seemed to hold her back.
"Adhi," she whispered, her voice trembling, making my own resolve waver. "You have no idea how much I want to believe you, how much I want to be with you. But I can't... I can't drag you into my mess."
I cupped her face more firmly, my thumbs brushing away her tears, hoping to offer her some comfort. "Sam," I said softly, my voice steady despite the churning emotions inside me. "You're not a mess. You're a person who's been through a lot and come out stronger. I want to be here for you, to face whatever comes our way together."
Her eyes were filled with doubt, and her voice cracked as she spoke. "But what if I can't be there for you in the same way? What if I hurt you, Adhi? What if I'm not strong enough to handle this?"
I shook my head, forcing a small smile. "Strength isn't about never being afraid, Sam. It's about facing those fears and moving forward. And you're one of the strongest people I know."
She seemed to want to believe me, but fear and doubt still clouded her expression. "I just... I don't want to be a burden to you. You've already done so much for me, without even knowing it."
"You're not a burden," I said firmly, hoping my conviction would reach her. "And you never will be. Whatever happens, we'll figure it out together. You're not alone."
For a moment, I saw a flicker of hope in her eyes, but it was quickly overshadowed by the same fear that had been gripping her. "I need time," she finally said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I just... I need to figure things out on my own first."
Her words hit me hard, but I managed to nod, trying to keep my expression understanding. "I get it," I said softly. "Take all the time you need, Sam. I'll be here, waiting."
The sadness of her request weighed heavily on me, but I knew it was the right thing to do. I hated the thought of her struggling alone, but I understood her need for space.
"I'll be here too," she whispered back, her voice choked with emotion. "I promise."
As her voice trailed off, I stayed with her, holding her gently. The warmth of her body against mine was a bittersweet comfort. I could feel her heart slowing, her breaths evening out as she finally fell asleep.
I remained in that embrace, savoring the closeness for as long as I could. When I was sure she was deeply asleep, I carefully untangled myself from her arms, being as gentle as possible to avoid waking her.
I took one last look at her peaceful face, feeling a mix of love and sorrow. Then, with a heavy heart, I quietly left her room and made my way back home. The night air felt cold and distant, mirroring the emptiness I felt inside.
I hoped that, given time, Sam would find her way back to me. Until then, all I could do was wait. I promised myself I would always be here for her, no matter how long it took.
