Adhi's pov:
I stared at the list Sam had made, all the places she dreamed of visiting. One place stood out to me: Mumbai. I smiled, imagining the look on her face when she realized I'd planned to take her there. It was one of those cities she had always wanted to explore.
I made all the arrangements—flights, accommodation, and a day full of activities. I wanted it to be perfect. Of course, I needed help covering for me, or rather, covering for *her*. That's where Nitya came in. She'd agreed to back me up with Sam's parents.
Convincing Sam's parents wasn't easy. They were overly cautious, especially when it came to their daughter. But Nitya was smooth with her words, assuring them that this was just a simple trip with friends—nothing wild or dangerous. I had to keep reminding myself that I was technically in Sam's body and needed to respect the boundaries she'd set with her parents.
As the clock ticked closer to 5, I felt a mix of nervousness and excitement. I knew how much this meant to her, and I couldn't wait to see her reaction. Taking her to Mumbai wasn't just about fulfilling one of her dreams, it was my way of showing her that I was paying attention, that I cared—whether we were in each other's shoes or not.
Now, I just had to make sure everything went smoothly. No pressure, right? At 5, while I was waiting outside for her to come out of my house, she stepped out and smiled as soon as she saw me. She rushed over, her eyes full of curiosity.
"Hey! What have you planned this time?" she asked, excitement dancing in her voice.
I grinned and teased, "I think you'll have to wait for that, Adhi!" I motioned for her to open the car door. When she did, her eyes lit up as she spotted her best friend inside. I knew she missed Nitya, so I figured having her along until we got to the airport—something Sam didn't know about yet—would be the perfect touch.
"Hi! Nitya, how are you?" Sam asked, trying to keep her excitement in check, careful not to show too much emotion since Nitya had only met Adhi once.
"Oh my god! *Adhithya Krishnamoorthi* remembers my name!!" Nitya squealed dramatically, making both of us laugh.
"I would never forget you, Nitya!" Sam smiled brightly. "And of course, you're Sam's best friend."
As I looped my hand through Sam's, placing my palm on hers, I couldn't help but notice how small her hands looked next to mine. It was these little things, these simple moments, that made me realize how much I enjoyed being close to her.
We settled into the car, and Nitya, always the chatterbox, filled the silence with stories. Sam glanced at me curiously but didn't press further about our destination. She seemed content, and that made everything worth it. I was taking her somewhere that mattered—somewhere she could relax, be herself, and maybe... just maybe, we could figure out what was happening between us.
As we neared the airport, I noticed that Sam was more confused than curious. She kept glancing at me with worried eyes before finally pulling out her phone and texting me.Sam: Where are we going, Adhi?
I smiled, trying to reassure her, and texted back: "We're going somewhere special, don't worry, I've taken care of everything."
Sam: But Adhi, my parents!
Me: "I talked to them. Nitya and I told them we're going out as friends. And don't worry, we told them it's strictly *no boys*!"
Still not entirely convinced, Sam looked at me, her eyes full of concern. She bit her bottom lip nervously and started bouncing her leg in that anxious way she does. God, I hated it when she gets like this, and it didn't help that I was the one causing it!
"Do you trust me?" I asked softly, placing my hand gently on her leg to stop the bouncing.
She looked at me, her eyes uncertain but warm. "I do! But..." she trailed off, taking a long breath before finally saying, "You only live once, right?"
I chuckled, feeling the tension ease, and leaned over to give her a peck on the cheek. Her eyes widened in surprise, just as a loud cough came from the front seat. Oh, crap. I'd completely forgotten Nitya was there!
"Get a room, you two," Nitya teased, looking back at us with a mischievous grin.I shot her a playful smirk and replied, "Oh, we already did."
Sam's eyes widened even more, and she slapped my arm. "Sam!" she hissed, but she couldn't help but laugh along with us.
The playful banter did the trick, though. Sam seemed more relaxed now, her nervous energy melting into the lightness of the moment. Nitya's laughter filled the car as we all joked, but beneath it, I could sense Sam was finally starting to trust the surprise.
We arrived at the airport, and Sam's eyes grew even wider as she realized what was happening. "Are we really going to Mumbai?" she asked, her voice a mix of excitement and disbelief.
I nodded, my heart swelling with joy at her reaction. "Yes, we are. I wanted to take you somewhere special, and I know how much you've always wanted to visit Mumbai."
Sam's eyes sparkled with happiness, and for a moment, all her worries seemed to disappear. "Thank you, Adhi! This means so much to me."
"Anything for you," I whispered back, holding her close.
As we boarded the plane, I could see the excitement and anticipation on Sam's face. This trip was more than just a getaway; it was a chance for us to create new memories together, to explore our feelings, and to enjoy each other's company in a city that held so much promise.
