The reunion

Aarohi’s heart raced as she heard the doorbell ring. The evening had settled into a quiet calm, with the usual hustle and bustle of the day fading into a stillness that left her hyper-aware of every sound. She wasn’t expecting anyone, especially not at this hour. As she rose from her seat, her footsteps echoed softly through the house, each step carrying a strange mix of hope and dread.

When she reached the door, Aarohi hesitated, her hand hovering over the handle. The thought that this could be another cruel twist of fate made her stomach churn, but a flicker of hope pushed her forward. With a deep breath, she unlocked the door and slowly pushed it open, the hinges creaking slightly.

Her breath caught in her throat as she saw Neil standing there, bathed in the soft glow of the porch light. He looked just as she remembered him, yet somehow different, as though time had barely touched him. Beside him, clutching his hand tightly, was their little Ruhi, her wide eyes filled with wonder. Aarohi’s mind struggled to comprehend what she was seeing. Was this a dream? An illusion? But when Neil smiled at her—his familiar, comforting smile that always made her feel safe—the tears she had been holding back for so long finally spilled over.

A soft, broken sob escaped her as she stood frozen, unable to move or speak. Neil, seeing her hesitation, stepped forward and gently pulled Ruhi along. "Chipkali, aren’t you going to hug me?" he asked softly, using the playful nickname that had always made her smile. At that moment, the last of Aarohi’s restraint crumbled. She flung herself at him, wrapping her arms around his neck and burying her face in his chest as she sobbed uncontrollably. The scent of him, the warmth of his embrace—it was all real. Neil was real, and he was here.

Ruhi, sandwiched between her parents, giggled as she tried to join the hug. Aarohi, realizing her daughter was there, pulled her in closer, holding both Neil and Ruhi as tightly as she could. This was her world, the family she had thought she had lost forever. The reunion was filled with tears, laughter, and an overwhelming sense of relief. For a moment, time seemed to stop as they held each other, basking in the warmth and love that filled the room.

Eventually, they moved inside, where the rest of the family gathered around Neil, each member struggling to hold back their emotions.

As they sat together, the weight of the moment settled over them like a comforting blanket. The pain of the past was still there, but it was overshadowed by the joy of their reunion. They silently vowed to stay together, to face the future as a united family, and to cherish every moment they had been given.

That night, after the house had quieted down, Neil and Ruhi found themselves unable to sleep. Ruhi clung to her father, giggling as he tickled her and told her stories, making up for all the lost time. Neil couldn’t take his eyes off his little girl; she had grown so much, and he marveled at how beautiful and full of life she was. Every laugh, every smile filled his heart with joy and gratitude for this second chance.

As the night grew late, Neil finally managed to get Ruhi to sleep. He tucked her in, brushing a soft kiss against her forehead. Watching her sleep peacefully, he whispered, "I’m never leaving you again, my little princess."

Quietly, Neil made his way back to Aarohi, who was sitting on their bed, lost in thought. She looked up as he entered the room, her eyes still red from crying, but there was a softness in her gaze that spoke of love and relief. Neil sat beside her, gently taking her hand in his. "I never thought you would become this beautiful," he said softly, his voice filled with awe.

Aarohi, trying to lighten the mood, smiled slightly. "So, I wasn’t beautiful before?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly. Neil chuckled, leaning in to kiss her gently. "You were always beautiful, Aarohi. But now… now, you’re even more beautiful. Especially in saree… there’s something about you that takes my breath away."

They sat there for a while, just holding each other, their hearts speaking the words they couldn’t find. It was a simple moment, but it was everything they had ever wanted. They had each other again, and for the first time in what felt like forever, they allowed themselves to believe that things would be okay.

A year passed, filled with moments of healing, love, and joy. Neil and Aarohi grew closer than ever, cherishing every second they had together. Ruhi thrived, surrounded by the love of both her parents. The family bond grew stronger, and the past pains slowly began to heal.

One day, Neil and Ruhi found themselves in the hospital again, but this time, it was a day of joy. Aarohi had just given birth to their second child, a beautiful baby boy. As Neil cradled the tiny bundle in his arms, his eyes filled with tears of happiness. Ruhi, standing on tiptoes to get a better look at her baby brother, beamed with pride. She leaned in and whispered, "Welcome to the world, baby Aarav," before planting a gentle kiss on his forehead.

Neil looked at Aarohi, who was lying in bed, exhausted but radiant. He walked over to her, baby Aarav still in his arms, and sat beside her. "Our family is complete," he said softly, his voice filled with emotion. Aarohi smiled, her eyes brimming with tears as she reached out to touch Aarav’s tiny hand. "Yes, it is," she whispered, her heart overflowing with love.

Later, as the four of them—Neil, Aarohi, Ruhi, and baby Aarav—shared a quiet moment together, Neil couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude. They had been through so much, faced so many challenges, but they had come out stronger. And now, they had this beautiful family, this perfect moment.

The nurse came in and offered to take a photo, and they all gathered together, their faces filled with happiness and contentment. As the camera clicked, capturing the moment forever, Neil looked at his family and knew, without a doubt, that this was the life he had always dreamed of.

The photo, framed and placed in their living room, would serve as a reminder of their journey—the pain, the loss, but also the love, the joy, and the resilience that had brought them to this place. It was a symbol of everything they had overcome and everything they had gained, and every time they looked at it, they would remember that no matter what life threw at them, as long as they had each other, they would be okay
