Y/N POV
I woke up at 8 a.m. sharp, feeling the comforting warmth of Kazuha snuggled against me. I groaned softly, rubbing my eyes in a feeble attempt to shake off the remnants of sleep. Kazuha stirred beside me, instinctively curling up even closer, and the gentle rhythm of her breathing made it all the more tempting to drift back into slumber. The comfort of the moment wrapped around us like a familiar blanket, and I took a deep breath, letting the tranquillity of the morning wash over me. Sunlight filtered through the curtains, casting a soft glow across the small space we shared, illuminating the cosy chaos of our lives scattered around the room.
"Psst, we've got a big day ahead of us," I whispered, breaking the stillness.
She let out a sleepy sigh, her face burying deeper into my shirt. "Five more minutes," came her muffled reply, and I could feel the weight of her reluctance.
I chuckled softly, knowing how hard it could be to resist the allure of a warm bed. "Come on, the squad is probably downstairs already, plotting without us."
With a groan, Kazuha finally pried herself away from my side, blinking sleepily. "Fine, I'm up," she muttered, though she made no immediate move to get out of bed.
I sat up, stretching my arms over my head and feeling the satisfying crack of my joints. "Well, today's the day we find out who Y is," I reminded her, a mix of excitement and anxiety bubbling up inside me.
"Yeah," she yawned, rubbing her eyes. "Let's just hope today doesn't involve any explosive surprises or unwanted casualties. I've had enough drama for a week."
Just then, a firm knock broke our morning reverie. "Come in!" I called, still somewhat bleary-eyed.
Kyujin entered with purpose, tossing my phone onto the bed as if it were a hot potato. "Twenty-nine missed calls from Ning-Ning," she announced, her eyebrow raised in a mix of disbelief and amusement.
"Oh shit," I cursed under my breath, scrambling for my phone. I felt the heat rising in my cheeks knowing how often I left her hanging. Quickly, I tapped on her number, and the ring echoed in the serene atmosphere of the room. Kyujin recognized the cue and exited while closing the door behind her with a soft click.
The call finally connected after what felt like an eternity. "I called you twenty-nine times, Y/N," Ning-Ning's voice was both exasperated and playful, though I could hear the undertones of worry.
I winced, a mixture of embarrassment and concern flooding my thoughts as Kazuha tried to stifle a laugh beside me. I shot her a playful glare and cleared my throat, focusing back on the call.
"Yeah, I was a bit sleep-deprived. Not everyone can run on caffeine and adrenaline like you," I replied, trying to sound nonchalant as I attempted to make light of the situation. "What's the urgent news?"
She sighed heavily on the other end. "The race meet today might be cancelled," she said, her tone grim. "I'll keep you updated as soon as I can."
"Seriously?" I ran a hand through my tangled hair, feeling the weight of the news pressing down on me. "Thanks for the heads up. By the way, could you bring an extra bike? Any from your garage will do."
Silence lingered on the line, broken only by the faint sound of crackling from the connection. "I remember you crashed one of them," she said, her voice laced with scepticism.
"And I remember fixing it for you," I retorted dryly, annoyance creeping into my tone. The last thing I needed was this added stress on top of everything else. I had a knack for pushing other people's buttons but I wasn't the only one with the talent.
