Rory~
THE sun was just beginning to rise over the horizon, casting a soft, golden glow through the windows of the Chateau. The air was filled with the faint sound of waves crashing in the distance, and the smell of the ocean. I had woken up with a burst of energy, feeling unusually chipper, and decided to channel that into making pancakes for everyone, as I got out of my bedroom, softly shutting the door behind me as JJ was fast asleep.
The kitchen was my sanctuary this morning, a place where I could lose myself in the rhythm of cooking and forget about the chaos that had been swirling around us lately.
I hummed a little tune as I poured batter into the sizzling pan, watching as the pancakes formed perfect circles. The kitchen was quiet, save for the occasional creak of the floorboards as someone moved around the house. It was peaceful, almost like a scene from a different life—one where everything wasn't constantly on the brink of falling apart.
As I was flipping a pancake, I heard footsteps coming down the hallway. I glanced up to see Pope, looking surprisingly awake for this early hour, which was a rare sight. But his hair was a tousled mess, looking like he'd just rolled out of bed. He still looked slightly sleepy, as though he did not get enough rest.
"Morning, Pope," I greeted with a smile. "Ready for some breakfast?"
"Morning, Ro," Pope mumbled, rubbing his eyes. He shuffled over to the counter, peering curiously at the sizzling bacon. "Need any help?"
I chuckled, shaking my head. "You can try, but I'm not sure you'll know what to do."
Pope leaned against the counter, crossing his arms with a mock air of confidence. "Hey, I'm good at a lot of things, but cooking... that's a mystery I haven't cracked yet."
"Right, the genius nerd who can solve any puzzle, and crack any code but can't figure out how to flip a pancake," I teased, flipping one with a flourish. "It's all in the wrist, you know. Like the way you solve math problems without breaking a sweat."
Pope laughed, the sound still thick with sleep. "Yeah, well, if I need to solve for X in the kitchen, I'll let you know. But I'll leave the cooking to you."
